Re: Seeking VHF recommendation

An AIS transceiver will come with an internal GPS. I'm a strong advocate of AIS transceivers rather just receivers. I do almost all of my sailing offshore and often out of sight of land so I'm a big believer in good radios and redundant GPS receivers. A new radio with a built-in GPS works for me. Y...

Re: The actual odds of being hit by lightning

How many times do you have to get hit to realise that grounding is what's causing it, DO NOT ground your mast under any circumstances. Dimitri got hit twice, once grounded and once ungrounded. Both times on a boat-lift though, which makes me feel better because I don't have a boat lift. I think thi...

Re: The actual odds of being hit by lightning

I happen to have the list of things I replaced on the boat after the second strike: But no hull damage, correct? That's a big relief, suggesting that there's a way for the electricity to get out of the Mac without having to melt a hole in the fiberglass. I wonder how a person would have fared if th...

Re: Those with Facebook…

The amount of idiocy on FB is just saddening. Doesn't matter what forum you are on, a lot of people have so much fun tearing others down, making stupid comments just for the reaction satisfaction.

That's why we love this place. I wish more people would check in here, instead of there.

Re: Raymarine EV-100 Wheel Pilot -Mac26X

Expanding the Raymarine network: added the AIS700 transmitter/receiver. I'm running out of real-estate to mount things :D The control unit is mounted over the aft port berth, below and aft of the original fuse panel. I mounted the GPS antenna INSIDE the cabin, behind the roof liner of the aft port b...

Re: Mold?

Starscream, If the bilge areas are used for storage, how resilient is this compound to abrasion, or do you only apply during off season storage :?: It can be wiped off fairly easily, but if the space isn't used much it'll stay there for quite some time, like over a year. When I spring-clean I remov...

Re: Mold?

A good choice for surfaces that are somewhat hidden, like the entire bilge and hidden side of the liner is a product called Concrobium. It's sprayed on, and it leaves a white powdery residue that prevents the re-formation of mold. Concrobium is based on baking soda, washing soda, and trisodium phosp...

Re: Sewing Machine thoughts.

Can't help you on the decision between those models, bit for my cockpit enclosure and cushion projects I just used a Singer Heavy Duty machine available at Costco or Walmart for a fraction of the price. https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/b63b0dd2-347e-47c6-a871-1a2b3cee39d6_1.8ceaf5387767456ccd9e5e77b...

Re: Bahamas 2025 Planning

Ah, after a convo last night with my boys, we have two other things to possibly add to the list: Starlink and a generator. Added points 15 and 16 to keep track of. 1) Katadyn Powersurvivor 40e watermaker 2) More solar, possibly a rigid panel mounted on a stern arch of some sort. I'm now reconsiderin...

Re: Uflex rotary steering

I have no experience with commercially produced wheel pilots other than what info has been posted on this forum. The speed at which an auto system can correct your heading after a wind gust, large wave or current will be critical I suspect. Could those that have them installed give me some idea of ...

Re: Bahamas 2025 Planning

So good to hear from you Mike, and what good advice, thank you. I remember about a decade ago Quebec1 towed down to miami in a Bahamas attempt, also on a short schedule, and he never ended up making the crossing because of weather, but had a blast in the local waters. That's always an option. We'll ...

Re: Bahamas 2025 Planning

1st off, there are a lot members (me included) wishing you all the best; successful planing and a successful trip. I remember years ago reading reports of trips by the Conch Cruisers suggesting back up items. I mention this because I see only one anchor. A 13lb Mantus is good, but you need a back u...

Bahamas 2025 Planning

I am starting to plan a Bahamas trip, around Christmas of 2025. I'm not sure if it will actually come true or not, but we are beginning to outfit Bear Hunt for the voyage. I think that a thread documenting my thought process and contributions from others will be very useful. The destination isn't pl...

Re: Raymarine EV-100 Wheel Pilot -Mac26X

I don't know who needs to know this right now, but the EV-100 autopilot pack is currently on sale at Defender.com at $1200 US, which is the best price I've seen for a long, long time.

Re: 26X "Mac Slap"

Let me know your 0.02$ :macx: :macx: When I repaired the centerboard I didn't bother with trying to correct the clunk. We sleep with the board up, of course. I also have the dyneema replacement line, and it's a bit of a problem because it slips too easily through the cam cleats, causing the board t...
