Re: Almost ready to float

I thought the second hole was meant to adjust the rake of the mast. Not sure if the difference is significant--I use the front or the rear hole indiscriminately: whichever comes in handier when I attach the forestay.

Re: 26X "Mac Slap"

There was an older thread (which I could no longer find) about putting a tight ball-bearing ring around the centerboard's axle, which will allow up-and-down movement freely, but not so much laterally so it wouldn't bang against the walls of the boot. I'd been considering it in the past, but never go...

You might want to check out Victor Maynard's entries on this site. He also perfected a home-made autopilot and may have good advice, things to avoid, general snags, weak spots, problematics, liabilities, and so forth and so on

Re: Courageous Mod 3: Battery Monitors/USB

Yup, I used to have one too, and upgraded it to an even more sophisticated version. But when it went on the fritz, the Xantrex people were less than helpful-- sent them countless messages and phone calls and they simply said: "no longer made, no longer supported" Replaced it with a Dutch V...

Re: celebrating 20 years of Mac ownership

Ah, memories… I, too, have reached the 20-year threshold with my Mac. Seems like yesterday. I found one in Colorado and drove to pick her up from Iowa, over the spring break. The boat was not ready—fortunately! On the way back, a heavy snow storm blanketed the central states. I doubt I could have ma...

Re: Issue with new trailer

That's an ongoing problems with the after-market trailer (but it plagues the owners of the original trailer to some extent). When you pull the boat out of the water onto the trailer, the angle between the boat's longitudinal axis and the trailer's is way different than the one obtained when you pull...

Re: Is A MacGregor the right boat for me?

That is correct--but there will always be people complaining about the lack of head-room. My mate is under 6 feet tall and he was still bitching and moaning that he couldn't cook 'properly' at the stove. Had to point out that he could easily slide the hatch open and stand on a stool, if he so desire...

Re: Macs in the News!

Have trailered the Mac in several configurations: Plymouth town-and-country (stable enough, but the engine was marginal--had to stop at the top of a hill to let the temp go down) Honda Odyssey--pretty good rig, Jeep Cherokee--didn't like it-seemed to be struggling and not as half as stable as the Pl...

Re: Rudder ropes

The cleats are sort of T-shaped, right? There's enough room under the upper part of the T which sits on two "legs," with a little gap between them to thread the rudder ropes through it and let the loop loose. Works pretty well!

Re: Loose Steering Advice

In what ways is the system "loose"? How can the wheel have a "lateral movement? Look at the steering cable which comes from the column/below deck/ into the cockpit. Turn the wheel. Does the cable respond? You should see where it is attached to the steering system in front of your engi...

ETEC Woes

I had switched to an Evinrude ETEC 50 about five years after I had bought the boat. Amazing engine--when it works; It sips gas gingerly at 2200 RPMs giving us 3.5 kts of speed, it has enough gas in its entrails that you don't even have to press the bulb when you take it out for the first time in spr...
