Re: Max Horsepower for '01 26 x

Not sure about "biggest", but... when also considering price, weight, reliability... I went with an older Johnson/Evinrude 120 two stroke V4 (not the V6). Super reliable, super common, and EVERYONE seems to know how to fix them. It looks like it belongs there. If you go with a taller V6 or the even ...

Re: Swing Keel rope replacement

The non-hinged end of the board is usually held up by the trailer, so if your existing rope is gone, when you unbolt the hinge bolt, the whole thing will drop which is why the suggestion to have someone under the boat or a floor jack. If you still have a working rope, you can cleat it off with some ...

Re: Ballast leak

Is the sink drain above water when the ballast is empty and under when ballast is full?
Far more likely the sink drain hose is leaking.
Sticking a plug in the drain might be a quick an inexpensive test.

Re: Swimming deck, or platform?

Been thinking about this for a while, the X is very crowded back there. going over the side gives a tall gunwale. have kept the following in my ebay list. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Osculati-Stainless-Steel-6-Step-Foldable-Ladder-for-Stern-Hull-Platforms/142151490566?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trk...

Re: Gooseneck Mast slider

Every time I look into the sliders so can adjust my boom or more easily remove it for trailering, I look at where the sail track opening is and realize that is exactly where I need the slider to be. Not all of us have a topping lift. What I have done is.... modified the way the bottom front of the s...

Re: Alternative to Starboard

I have used 1x6 as part of my gutting and rebuilding the head in my X so we can actually use it. The boards cut and route just like a soft wood but, with no grain they do not hold wood screws very well. They hold screws enough to pull the boards tight for the pvc glue to set. So far, I can verify th...

Re: I know everything ... but have a rudder question.

Seems I have read many comments on the X sailing better with weight in the bow. Could be the fuel/motor's weight is upsetting the balance. Might be the power boat back end is too deep, vs the hull presenting more of a sailboat shape if the back is less deep. I have the origional 4s honda 50 and only...

Affordable sail out of Honolulu?

Will be making a trip to Honolulu to check off a Perl Harbor bucket list item. Does any one know of an affordable way to go for an ocean sail? Specifically I do not want to be on a commercial Cat or a multi million buck luxury tour. I just want an ocean sail on a "normal" v-hull where I can take the...

Re: I know everything ... but have a rudder question.

I bought a replacement rudder from Idea about a year or two ago. While it is a tiny bit wider, and the holes are in slightly different locations, I do not see any legitimate difference between my remaining stock rudder and my new one. I actually called them and asked if they still made the "high per...

Re: Installing fair leads

Wanting to avoid holes that might leak or pull out...
I have lashed fairleads/pullies to my pulpit and the to the safety line stanchions.
Lashed = tied on with ropes so it gives a bit of movement, mainly because I did not find the bolt on type that I was willing to pay for.

Re: Advice on buying 26M/X

We chose the X due to the bathroom location and the lack of carpet on the walls. (My first sailboat and the Admiral had most of the X vs M opinion.) She felt it was easy to clean. With some experience, I find the backstay on the X to be annoying. My advice is to look at the motor's condition very ca...

Re: How do I pull further onto the trailer?

Ok, have been out sailing, put the boat on the trailer, had the normal move backwards away from the bump stop when I pulled it out of the water. Tried unhooking the strap so there is no downward tension on the nose, did the bump... Magic happened and the boat scooted right up into the bump stop. WAA...

Re: LED lights for cabin and navigation.

I would have to go ask Dr. Google. Just know in my days where you could build a TV from a kit using a soldering iron, diodes were a normal part of the design. High power still used vacuum tubes, low power used diodes, transistors ,resisters, chokes, capacitors, etc.... Transistors are a fancy contro...

Re: LED lights for cabin and navigation.

A question on polarity: will reversing +/- damage the LED bulbs, or just keep them from working? Does not hurt anything. LED = Light Emitting Diode = A normal diode is a 1 way electrical switch designed to have power applied in either direction, and the diode allows the electricity to flow or not f...

Re: LED lights for cabin and navigation.

+1 on the polarity. I found some led fixtures that had a 3 position switch, one position was red, the other white. The red is great for night vision. Nav I replaced the front fixture with an attwood 2 color light https://www.ebay.com/itm/2NM-Attwood-LED-Bi-color-Bow-Navigation-Light-Red-Green-3540-7...
