Re: stove types, alternatives to alcohol?

Unpressurised burner = very safe. Yes. Infallible? No. We know of a very serious accident involving an Origo stove - so read the instructions before use and always follow them. The accident was caused by topping up the fuel when the cooker was still warm. In such circumstances it is possible for the...

Re: Yamaha 50hp stutters

The model is FT50CETL - it's not on Boats.net - maybe not sold in the States?

Here is a Yamaha website with the details

Re: Yamaha 50hp stutters

Thanks guys The motor is a 2004 model 4 separate carbs, 4 stroke - more or less the last of the non EFI models. There's no mecahanical distributor for the spark - it's all electronic. The fuel pump has 2 outlet tubes each of which splits just before the carb assembly with T joints so there one tube ...

Yamaha 50hp stutters

My 2003 Yamaha 50hp (carb model) has started to be unreliable when accelerating quickly or when doing a "three point turn" using firm revs forward then in reverse. Tickover and steady speed even at high revs are fine. I have begun to suspect the accelerator pump ie the diaphragm that is ac...

Re: Biggest ever rally

Andrew attended on board his Yarmouth 23. I'm not sure if the Tollesbury marina M was there or not. We were all together for the first couple of nights but because of the size of the rally we got a bit spread out after that. Some went home after the long weekend and others stayed on for up to a week...

Biggest ever rally

As part of its 21st year celebrations, the UK MacGregor Owners Association has just held its August rally on the east coast of England, where we explored the coast and rivers including Arthur Ransome’s famous Secret Water. The territory is ideal for a Mac – one minute jostling for a gap in between a...

Wooden table top?

I am thinking of converting the cabin fibreglass table to a wooden one simply by covering with a fairly thin layer of ply which would be glued to the existing fibreglass top and adding edging to create fiddles in real hardwood. The edging could be rebated then screwed and glued to the existing top f...

Re: mast hound angle question

So here's another (related) question:- Judy B's picture of a toggle shows one with a split pin as the securing method. Does anyone have a view on the idea of using a snap shackle for this purpose? Are they secure enough for this purpose? They are used in lots of other fairly important locations but ...

Re: What's the best wire to use for the forestay?

Tensile strength: As I understand it, the strength is much the same as the ordinary stuff. Maybe a little less, in which case go up a size? Swage strength: Agreed - make sure your rigger does a good job of swaging. Cost and availability: The flexible stuff seems to be generally available from chandl...

What's the best wire to use for the forestay?

I recently asked a question in another thread about the use of flexible stainless steel wire but there were no takers. Given the continuing stories of forestay failure, it seems to me to be a really important idea, so I thought I'd ask again in a new topic. I'm talking about 7:19 s.s. wire which is ...

Re: Another forestay failure/mast crash

Question:- Would the use of flexible stainless steel wire be a good idea for the shrouds and particularly for the forestay? I've been told it has the same strength as normal s.s. wire but it is flexible so that it can be used in pulleys in machinery etc. Presumably it would be much better at coping ...

Re: Can't send PM?

Nope. I still don't get it.

Maybe Heath should provide some guidance on how to post jokes. Here are a few suggestions:-

1 Always avoid being patronizing.

2 Anything you write should be decipherable by the reader.

3 It should be funny.

Mike

ps - this is a joke

Re: Can't send PM?

The PM has now been sent, thanks. It wasn't to an American; it was to someone in Portugal. I can't respond to the other comments with my usual humorous banter because I don't know what they are about. I think this is mostly caused by the lexicon used in the posts which is unfamiliar to me, but I als...
