Re: Are surge brakes really worth the trouble and maintenanc

If towing with a vehicle able to adequately pull a near or over 2000kg boat and trailer you'd have to be looking at 4000kgs all up minimum....so relying on just the tow vehicle brakes could be asking for trouble.....a lot of tow vehicles around here are small trucks/utilities etc which are notorious...

Re: wind turbine

Looked into wind turbine and concluded the size required to make a meaningful difference to our electrical system would mean it was relatively large....and where do you put it and store it when trailing.....one thing though.... the wind can be around 24/7 unlike solar

Re: Would this a Mac survive too?

Don't worry I'm calm......just the idea of subjecting a Mac to this kind of situation has me rattled.....its actually sport around here to go to various "bars"....no not alcoholic ones and watch idiots attempting crossings.....authorities here have only recently made it mandatory to wear lifejackets...

Re: Would this a Mac survive too?

NO and NO to both......can't imagine putting a Mac in such a situation (ie coming over what I would call a "bar" from the open sea) and definitely would not think it would survive.....I'm surprised the boat in the clip did as well as what it did.I must probably temper my judgement by saying that man...

Re: Would this a Mac survive too?

I can't see a Mac ever being in a situation like this!!.......Not designed for the job

Guess I should have said I don't think any one would be silly enough to go there

Re: How you tie down?

Used to just strap down right across the cockpit but found our on the way usage of our Mac as a caravan made climbing over the strap a pain so now we use 2 shorter straps one down each side keeping the cockpit free of obstruction....works well and of course a chain at the bow so the winch is NOT the...

Re: New poll - just to get an idea

Our main anchor currently resides in the locker (well its actually too big so took of the lid)...also have a backup stored in the cockpit (slightly smaller but still bigger than needed)...both CQR style with more than adequate chain...and also have a large heavy folding grapnel again with chain...wh...

Re: going to sell my generator and buy 2 solar panels

Not sure about 17.5-22volt into your batteries direct....certainly would only do it to batteries capable of having the water replaced and even then not a good idea

Re: going to sell my generator and buy 2 solar panels

I guess ambient temperature is the telling factor...a lot of our sailing is in summer and 25-35+ deg Celcius is not that unusual....we also tend to go for 2 weeks at a time so the freezer is full on departure and often has supplies in it to last most of the time out.As discussed previous also found ...

Re: going to sell my generator and buy 2 solar panels

Fridge on 2 x 40 watt panels is not going to work....we have 200 watt of panels and bit bigger fridge and that's marginal....biggest problem is orientation to the sun on a boat and thus output is not ideal
