Mainsail down haul

How many of you have a line dedicated to dropping the sail? I saw a down haul mentioned in a video, and the notion that there may be a time when rapidly lowering the sail will be important haunts me. I have little sailing experience, but have never seen a down haul on a boat.

Boom bolt through the mast?

I assumed that bolting the boom gooseneck through the mast was a PO modification, as my other boats were held up by a friction bolt through the sail track. Looking through the manual shows the through bolt being used. If the boom is bolted in place, there is not room to raise the pop top. Any insight?

Re: what is this peeling stuff

It looks like a layer of paint put over a surface that was shiny or waxy and not prepped; the down side is that you can't just paint over it, as it will continue to peel. I'd scrape, sand, and maybe use some localized stripper, if it is shown to not damage the substrate.

Re: One day out of fourteen is better than none

Could those pieces be fabricated out of angle iron? A couple of hacksaw cuts, three holes, and I would think it would be better than new.

Fifty plus views and no replies...I will take that as a "no mast base plug."

Mast base cap?

My new-to-me Mac 22 is pretty stock, although most of the work I've done so far has been undoing the PO's improvements. I've practiced raising and dropping the mast with a winch/gin pole I rigged up. I notice the bottom of the mast is hollow and a little banged up: the lip is pushed in a little all ...

Re: Pop top on a Mac 22

Thanks Bud...digging around in the blocks of foam in back led me to find them, about an hour after I had made a couple from some scrap aluminum tubing. The gas lift still sounds good to me.

Re: Pop top on a Mac 22

I saw on another thread that a guy used automotive gas lifts...I think I will give those a try.

Pop top on a Mac 22

I just purchased a 1979 Mac 22 in used, but complete, condition. It badly needs paint and wood work. Right now, though, I wonder if anyone can give me a hint about how the pop top stays up? I can pull it all the way aft, but that isn't right. There are straps hold downs inside the top and just forwa...
