Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

Stephen, I agree. I think I backed it in...brakes were engaged...I didn't pull back forward...pistons "seized" (or whatever the technical term is) in the extended position. Might have been this way for the whole season for all I know. My normal trip is about 100 yards from parking spot to ramp so ne...

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

Did not do that. If they do "pop out" they won't go far...they are wrapped up in about 5 layers of duct tape.

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

Follow-up. Both brakes were engaged. Piston out pushing the pads against the disk (rotor??) Couldn't get it to retract. So we removed the wheels. Removed the calipers. Removed the pads. Couldn't put the calipers back on because they move around too much without the pads to hold them in place. So I s...

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

...I figure he was already overburdened with new knowledge... "overburdened with new knowledge"...that sounds about right. :? And "overburndened with fear"...that I will take these wheels off and get things so screwed up that I won't be able to get it working again. I need a drink...it's after 6:00...

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

Kevin, Copy all. My trailer is only 15 months old. Bought it brand new in June 2011. And I topped up the grease in April. So those bearings/races/seals are not very old or wore out...or at least I wouldn't think so. If I get so far as to take the hub off and the bearings out I will go ahead and try ...

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

Robert,

I have a Load-Rite Dual Axle Aluminum trailer. Not stock.

I will give it a go either Wed or Thur of this week and see what I can see. If I can't get it working good enough I will have Saturday to get more done if necessary.

Thanks,
Jim

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

Robert, You nailed the issue. First is brakes. For some reason the brakes are holding hydraulic pressure keeping the brakes engaged. Why? Hubs got hot...but I only went 7 miles (then stopped for 30 minutes) then went 7 miles back to marina. So how much damage did I do????? I am going to try and get ...

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

A photo would help here, but it's possible you have E-Z-Lube axle spindles. The spindles are drilled down the center with a lateral exit hole that meets it at the rear bearing. The zerk fitting is actually in the end of the axle spindle. I'm not saying that's what you have, but from your descriptio...

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

You guys are scaring me...

I sure hope I have 3G working at the marina this Thursday so I can scan through all of this advice as I am attempting to do this.

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

Pretty sure I have "Bearing Buddies" but the caps are a little different looking. They don't slide over the top of the buddy but sort of "insert" into the buddy and cover the grease fitting. I use a screw driver to pry off this rubber cap...pump in the grease...then reinstall the cap. My old trailer...

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

Thanks again. You guys are very fast and very helpful. I go to YouTube for a few minutes of searching and come back and you have posted numerous links for me to review.

Now I need to start watching some videos...Good thing I don't have any "real work" to do... 8)

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

Found these videos:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9WdVdaLVQE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtqIKTLQPuo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Bgxcy6DDDw

These videos don't show brakes. And in some cases they left the tire on. But does this look like what I should see/do?

Thanks,
Jim

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

Having never done anything to my bearings other than pump in some grease into the bearing buddies can anyone give me any more detailed info on how to remove and replace these bearings...and all the associated hardware? Using a 1-10 scale to rate my "mechanical knowledge and abilities" I am probably ...

Re: Brakes not dis-engaging -- VERY hot!!!

Fellas...THANKS! I am pretty sure the tongue is extending. There is a hole in which I can stick the lock-out pin and when the trailer is compressed that hole is covered by the compression of the tongue and when extended I can see the hole and insert the pin. I can see the hole and insert the pin. So...
