Fuses and circuit breakers protect the wire and not the device. In your case, you have two devices, a battery and a battery charger. Here is what the title says. MACR3990L586 from that i'm guessing it was made in May of 1986. You can keep the existing wiring and use the method described in this mod. Also, if you use LEDs for the lights, you may not need to add the diodes:
