1976 Venture 22 Rudder?

As stated I have a venture 22/222 1976 boat. I would like information on the orginal rudder for boat. What is on boat appears to be a homade kick up rudder made of wood. It only kicks up to 90 degree and it got broken in this position at the 90 deg positon.
It never worked correctly in my mind. I could rarely get it to stay down all the way it would usually pop back up to the 90 deg position. I have not been able to find much info on replacement rudders for this boat. So I would like pictures and specs if any one has them. When I sail with the old rudder it can hardley go into the wind unless it is extremly strong, I think this is due to fact that most times I could not get rudder fully extened down and would more then likely pop up when I did get it down.

You have to add a line to the leading edge and a cleat just below the base of the handle. When you push down the rudder you then tie off on the cleat keeping tension on the forward section and in turn keeping it in the down position. This will still allow it to pop up if it strikes something but will keep it in place while sailing. I have the same setup on my 73 2-22 and never have any issues once the rope/line is tied off to the cleat. I will try and take a picture for you to see what I am referencing.

I have line and cleat but I don't think it is correct place because it does not stop it from poping up. The bigger problem is that since rudder is made of wood I can not get it in down position to begin with, I have tried using boat hook to push it down, but it keeps slipping off before all the way down. I can't put it down before I leave my dock because it is in a creek with at most 2 ft of draft, when I get closer to the lake I can then try to put it down.

I think the "original" rudder was one piece, at least it was on my 1976 v-25. Some just cut the original in half, added metal one each side, and made the bottom pivot so as to allow it to come up when entering shallow water or hitting an obstruction. Although the keel would actually hit first.

You will need a line on the leading edge of the bottom portion of the rudder that has a cleat at the leading edge of the top portion. When you tighten this line down it will hold the rudder down but still allow it to "pop up" if you hit something hard. Hope this is clear. Some people put the line on the trailing edge to keep it up when pulling out of the water.
