Sail replacement

Postby MacStonge » Sun May 06, 2018 9:10 am

Hello Folks,
Can anyone recommend the best source for a new (or even a good used) mainsail for my 1984 Mac 25?
I live in Canada.
Thanks

Depending on where you live check out Somerset Sails ...

http://www.somersetsails.com/

... and talk to Martin the owner. Great sails with features based on your needs and good prices.

We got our sails from him and I know of some Mac owners in Canada that have also done the same with a drive across the border since he is in upper New York. Here is more on what we bought....

Blue water yachts have a decent range of sails http://shop.bwyachts.com/category-s/298.htm

I bought a set and more than happy with them

If you are looking for a used sail, the guys at Masthead are great!

https://mastheadsailinggear.com/used-sails/

On my new to me M25, I needed a new headsail and they found something that would work and was a good price. Eventually I'll go to Bluewater and buy some new sails, but I was really looking for something to get me sailing cheap!

Good luck!

Got new custom made tri-radial cut sails from Precision Sails one one month previous. Have not had time to open the box.

Precision sails was great to work with for sure. We webex'd and they showed their CAD program making changes to the sails as we changed parameters. Super patient. Also mention the backdraft problem with the OE Main for them to consider in their model.

The head sail is a 130 Genoa, custom designed, low cut with luff rope that will have two sheets that feed to both the jib track and a new intermediate track (by the head) simultaneously. Hopefully allowing decent "jib" shape for close wind performance without having to go on deck to re-feed the sheets. The OE 150 is useless for heading up wind. +- 60 deg (at least).

Loose footed Main has two reef points with "dog bones" that will be used with single line reefing.

Both sails are made form Challenge 6.11 Warp Drive race/cruise cloth.

Lower cost than other vendors for this level of sails, especially when purchased on Black Friday.

Can't wait to see how they work. Hopefully as great as the new redesigned trailer.

I'll post pictures shortly.

Just a quick question. In searching mainsail options, I'm seeing "MacGregor 25" and "MacGregor 25 MH". Can anyone explain the difference? What does the "MH" refer to? Thanks

Evidently some of them were masthead rigged....

.... vs. fractional rigged....

I'd guess the masthead rigged ones are way in the minority??
