Valcour Island is one of my favorite episodes from the Revolution. We anchored once at Valcour Island, and just absorbed the scene, thinking back to those amazing deeds. If you ever make it the Smithsonian Museum of American History in DC, you can see the actual original Philadelphia. It was discovered at the bottom of the lake in the mid 1900's, raised, conserved and put on display. You can see the hole in her hull, where a British cannon ball pierced her at the waterline. They even have the cannon ball on display, which likely caused her to sink. If you visit Whitehall, at the head of the lake, you'll be at the scene of the foundries and sawmills where the Philadelphia and the other Valcour gunboats were constructed. Arnold was the only guy around who knew boats (he was a merchant mariner before the war), and he was responsible for overseeing the construction and fitting out of those boats.
