best sealant for deck perforations?

Postby Stevenhigbee » Tue Jul 11, 2017 6:45 pm

I'm installing a flexible water tank under the V-berth, and putting a fill port on the topside. Can I just use ordinary silicone caulk around the base of the ill port? And any suggestions for lining under the V-berth to prevent damage to the water tank from the rough fibreglass?

I have a 30 gallon water bladder under my V-berth. The fill port is in the anchor locker of my :macm: , not on the deck . I would use 3M 5200 around the fill port.

Silicon has no place on a boat. butyl tape or something like Sikaflex 291 or 3M 5200 which I have not used but is supposed to be pretty good from reports on here.

Silicon is the scourge of the boating community IMHO, sure its cheap but its just not good

+1 for butyl tape, never leaks remains pliable.
If you need to use a caulking gun get something like Bostik EZYCAULK BUTYL CAULKING COMPOUND

I am changing my recommendation to 3M 4200. It is just as good as 5200, but it can be removed. 5200 is permanent. I just installed a pump out port (very similar to your fill port, just opposite flow), and used 4200. Both 5200 and 4200 are super tough. Amaizing products.

I prefer butyl tape. Easy to store, easy to clean up if a mess is made, easy to apply (there's a tendency to use too much, in fact), and it stays pliable basically forever. In fact, some things I've sealed years ago have been slowly extruding excess, which needs to be cleaned off. But no leaks.

Not being aware of Butyl tape, I decided to do some research. What I discovered is that it is a very good product, and that it may even be better for flexibility than 4200. I've never had a problem. I'm guessing that the comparison is to 4200 because Butyl tape is also removable. 5200 is permanent. Butyl tape is man made rubber.

If Butyl tape is your decided choice, be aware of this bit of information.

Believe it or not, all butyl tape is not created equal. There are different shades of white, grey and black. I’ve always read that on a boat grey butyl is the way to go. The black tape stains gel coat and topside paint while the white isn’t as flexible or sticky. Alright, grey it is.

I bought the Bed-It butyl tape (gray  ) from a poster on another sailing forum who calls himself Maine Sail (Compass Marine). Expensive for two rolls, but will last me until I'm worm food. http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/buy_bedit_butyl_tape

I am a fan of butyl as well.

I used to be a 3M 5200 fan but have moved to PLS40 which I can't tell the difference in and can be bought for about $6 a tube at any home improvement store.

Review of it-

I have white butyl tape, damn stuff is really sticky, if the grey is stickier it would be like super glue :D .

Have heard the same about the black staining

PLS40 and 3M 5200 are both Polyurethane adhesive sealants the difference is 3M makes 5200 for marine use and it can be used in wet environments Loctite make PLS40 for home use as a door and window sealant and do not recommend it's use in wet areas so they may both have Polyurethane as their main ingredient but obviously are formulated differently for different purposes.

As for white vs black vs grey butyl tape I have both black and white tape from the same manufacture and apart from colour see no difference in them. Except of cause as stated the black can stain. I wonder if this a cold climate thing or just different manufacturers as it's the temperature that seems to determines the stickiness, the darker colours remain warmer in the sun than than the white so appear stickier :?:

For protection of water bag under our v-berth we went to home depot and bought a remnant of 1/4 inch thick indoor/outdoor carpet. We also used it on the deck aft of the galley and head on our 26X. You can see it in the mods under ris.
