What's a Good Price 4 a MacGregor 19 and have you tried one?

Post by MacNCheese »

Someone at my marina is selling their 1994 :mac19: for only $5000 (with his 50hp Mariner Outboard included) and the hull and sails look to be in good shape (http://www.dougpile.com/mac19/index.html)
What's a good price for a :mac19: ? If you've tried one do you like it?

It's only my girlfriend and I for crew so the smaller size wouldn't bother us but the guy who owns that 19 did say it didn't seem to steer as well as he'd like. Maybe there is a modification that will make it steer better.

If it's in good shape - the price is very attractive compared to others MAC 19's that have sold over the last year (time I've been watching) 8)

The owner sold his :mac19: the day after I asked him about it for only $3,800!! Doh!!
That was a sweet deal, don't expect to see that again for a while.

Maybe prices in these :mac19: powersailor's are coming down and they might be a good alternative for people with smaller budgets to get into the powersailing game.
Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about and the prices on them will stay high :?:

There is plenty of market for a small trailerable under 5k, but you might have to put a couple of boat bucks into it to get onto the water. Prices in this range are pretty stable. The problem facing the beginner is finding the information necessary to pull the trigger on a known budget...without a friend of yacht club nearby, that's a tough proposition.

In the example above, for instance, that motor could have value fom 0 to 1500 USD depending on its condition. If its blown, it's 3k to put on a used small motor and controls and suddenly your deal isn't so good.

The only thing I would wonder about is how do you stear the boat? Does it stear differently in sail and power modes?

Thought I saw one photo of the wheel in front of the companion way. it seemed like a really bad place. cause you have no where to sit when driving, and you have no way to get inside.

Just a thought.

I've seen one picture of a :mac19: using a tiller but you've hit the nail on the head. The steering is what that :mac19: owner complained about, and in fact, according to the :mac19: info site, that's exactly what a lot of :mac19: complain about:
"The Mac 19's biggest fault is sluggish steering. I haven't yet seen an elegant modification to fix this situation, but please let me know if you've implemented a solution to this problem." (Very top of page: http://www.dougpile.com/mac19/mods.html)

I don't know if the steering problem occurs under motor or sail power or both. I also wonder what MacGregor changed from the :mac19: to our 26 so that we don't have the same problem.

The :mac19: steers like any other sailboat .... tiller and rudders when sailing .... motor tiller when powering. There is no linkage to connect the rudders to the motor like the :macx: although some people have done it. Some people have also added wheel steering, but it wasn't standard.

As far as problems with sluggish steering, I haven't experience that on my :mac19: ..... turns just fine ... sailing or powering.

The :mac19: does not have standing head room unless u open the hatch some guy's converted the hinged hatch with gas strutts to make it a pop-top like the 26d or 26c

I lived in my :mac19: on wk-ends during the summer months was OK for a single guy but I'd think it would be crowded for two for more than one night great little power sailor but had to do alot of mods to make it a better sail boat where as the 26 C/D are ecellent sail boats & fast & with the pop-top up way more room for wk-ending or cruising

because the :mac19: is a power sailor it makes a good day sailor & power boat if u have a camper as a tow vehical or cottage to sleep in

Hey guys. I'm the one that bought that 19! Small world... One of the sweetest deals and little boats I've ever had! I drove all the way from Tucson to scoop it up. The thing is loaded to the gills too. Remote stick steering and throttle for the motor and has a compliment of electronics that I'm still trying to figure out. It was a little chalky on the outside but a few passes of the buffer should bring her back to life. I'm new to sailing but I know quality and the owner spared no expense on what he added. Unfortunately the boat did sit for almost a year due to some family issues but I had the thing cleaned up and ready to rock in a weekend. A few more of my personal touches and I'll be ready to put her in down south in San Carlos MX....

LOL! What are the chances of you finding this thread??

Congratulations on the best deal on a :mac19: that I've yet seen! ($3800) You were smart to jump on it fast, because if you had waited a few more days, you would have lost it :P

How much height room does it have by the way? Can you almost stand up in the cabin if you were a short man? Can you please post a few pictures?
Enjoy it and please let us know how it sails and motors for you.

Could you post some pictures? Wouldn't mind seeing the remote stick steering setup.

Thanks.
