Mainsail slugs

Postby kitcat » Fri Jun 10, 2011 9:18 am

Just how difficult are slugs to attach to the mainsail? Is it just a matter of making a small hole and slotting them through? I guess the bolt rope stays in place to strengthen the luff?

Paul.

Paul,

I got mine from Sailrite for $25. Lots of info in this post: Adding Slugs to the Factory Main sail

As for spacing and reefing grommet...part of that depends on your type of reefing system. I don't hook the grommet on anything. My single-line reefing runs through that grommet and the line pulls the grommet down to where the slugs stack up on top of each other on top of the "slug stopper". I think there are about 6 slugs below the grommet but not positive.

Slugs make it much easier to reef and much easier to raise and lower the main...and to be able to raise/lower and reef from the cockpit.

And yes, they just screw right over the bolt rope...very easy...the screws go right through the material with no problem.

Good Luck.

Cheers,
Jim

One day I'll buy a new sail with professionally installed slugs, but for now I think I'm gonna try the "No Grommet Required Type", on my old sail.

Sailrite has some informative how to videos.

I gotta tell you, for single handers (or anybody else for that matter), sail slugs are the NUTS :!: :!:

Rick

PS Lazy Jacks that work and install and uninstall easily on an M are the second NUTS :?:

Doug,

The link you posted did not work for me.

Try this one: Spacing Slugs or Slides on a Sail

I don't have grommets...I see no reason why you need them on this size sail.

Cheers,
Jim

Hmmm, Jim - the link works for me when I click on it. Anyway, the link you provided gets you close to the same place, there's a lot of good free videos there.

I don't have my main halyard run aft yet but when I went forward to drop the main it practically fell all the way. I only had to bunch up the last few feet. I need to run that line aft, it was a little scary dealing with the boom and the main with the boat rocking!
