Re: Thank You Health for getting the forum working again
I just saw someone on FB who said he was unable to register as a new member. The CAPTCHA wasn't working he said.
Is there a way to test this or get Heath to take a look at it?

I've brought this to Heath's attention multiple times, Russ. Perhaps if other folks also sent emails?

I was working on my boat in front of the house and had a guy stop. He has an also. I told him about this site and he said he was having the same problem trying to become a member.RussMT wrote:I just saw someone on FB who said he was unable to register as a new member. Captcha can be a problem - not just here. Any way to get rid of it? I have had situations where it's an "endless loop" - always more images,

Re: Thank You Health for getting the forum working again
Well, we need to have some sort of defense against 'bots and spammers. I've asked Heath to look into using Google's reCaptcha product, since that's becoming more commonly used and it's fairly effective without introducing the issues you noted.

What if "reCAPTCHA V1 IS SHUTDOWN" were the actual confirmation code to type in?!!

I've run phpBBS before and without CAPTCHA it gets infested with bot (fake) registrations and porn ads etc. You NEED some validation.dlandersson wrote:Captcha can be a problem - not just here. Any way to get rid of it? I have had situations where it's an "endless loop" - always more images,

We all hate CAPTCHAs but they are important. Sometimes simple validation works well. Like "What is the first name of the boat builder this site is named after?"
Bottom line is without new members, a site will deteriorate. I've been promoting this site and didn't know it hasn't had new members all year.

No arguement regaqrding validation. Just not sure that CAPCHA's is the only way to go.

Agreed. I absolutely HATE the "photo" CAPTCHA.dlandersson wrote:No arguement regaqrding validation. Just not sure that CAPCHA's is the only way to go.
"Choose the street signs". Does that include the pole it's mounted on? Arrrrg.

Re: Thank You Health for getting the forum working again
I realize Heath has a life and appreciate the massive task to rebuild the PHP tables here. Not to be too critical, but phpBB has auto db backup extensions.
But if he doesn't have time to maintain/fix the registration page, perhaps he needs to give someone admin rights or we should abandon this site and create a new one that can allow new members.
There is a wealth of great information here, but the search no longer works and without new members, it's just a club. I can no longer promote this site elsewhere.

Re: Thank You Health for getting the forum working again
I could say that the way it is now makes my job as a Moderator a cake-walk, but I agree with you Russ. I just don't have the time to do it. Why don't you make Heath an offer he can't refuse. It would be wonderful to see the site updated and come alive again.
