Folks,

I am starting to get my ducks in a row for when I retire in 3 years. We live in the UK, and I am finally getting my :macm: where I want it. I am playing around with the idea of just shipping it to Texas (retirement destination) on a ro/ro carrier. I know I don't want to container it because of the horror stories I hear about damage.

Does anyone here have an informed opinion? I could easily sell her here, and buy another one but then I have to start all over...

Thoughts?

Ok, I am not aware of the "horror stories" - link?

They are designed to fit inside a shipping container.

Plane C: Sail across the Atlantic and down the ICW. :)

Guess I asked the wrong forum...did not anticipate being mocked.

First of all, you have to either remove your axles or cut them off...maybe also the hitch. I have read on several forums of folks who had their hulls sustain considerable damage from containers that were treated in a less than gentle manner. Use of a "ro/ro" (roll on/roll off) eliminates most of these issues and leaves you with a trailer that, assuming you have a euro-spec ball hitch, you can hook up to and drive away.

I am pretty sure that the only mods I have to do are to convert the shore power to 110v, and to change our the lights and/or breaks. UK trailers use surge breaks.

Might be a cultural thing. Wasn't "mocking", was "dry humor". :wink:

Disclaimer, I have never shipped my Mac in a container, but I remember researching it. There were several pictures of Mac w/trailers inside shipping containers. Nothing was being cut or removed. My impressions could well be wrong.

I transported mine from the US to Australia back in 2013, I engaged a specialist company to do this for me, this is all they do, they have done it thousands of times for many years, RORO was the only option they make available, it is easy and cheap, you only pay for the boat and trailer, you don't pay for the weight of the container, the rent for the container or the thousands of cubic feet of air you don't use in a container. Zero risk of damage from the container itself and RORO ships are designed specifically for vehicles, every vehicle is tied to its deck. I have no idea why anyone would consider using a container. Mine arrived safe, perfectly on time and budget and if you are clever you can put a heap of stuff inside your boat because RORO doesn't charge by weight but by cubic meter.

Hi! I am very interested to know more about your experience on transporting your Mac from US to Australia. I am planning to transport mine from Sydney to Malaysia soon and am looking for an experience company to do so. May I know which company you used and how much it cost for you to transport your Mac?

Thanks for the excellent information. As we will be going from the UK to Texas, RORO is very much available. You have confirmed a lot of what my research shows me.
