FYI, Humminbird upgrade to Helix 5" Chirp DI GPS install on X

Post by dlandersson » Sat May 11, 2019 2:52 pm

Ok, my 97 X came with the Humminbird 787c2 - which I was perfectly happy with. Last summer it began acting up, the transducer seemed to have run into something, not sure. Since it was 15+ years old, I decided to replace it.

I went with another Humminbird for two main resaons. 1. I was pretty happy with the 787c2. 2. The power cable of the old 787c2 was exactly the same as the new Helix 5". Unless I wanted to replace the power cable, all I needed to do was use my existing one. One less cable to run,one less cable to hook up to my electircal system.

I did find that none of the Cabellas/Bass Pro shops sales people had any idea (not that they knew) about installing in anything but a fishing boat, 95% of their customers. The installation is pretty straitforward.

You really need TWO people when running the transducer cable under the cockpit - just sayn'. And a knife and some zip ties to replace the ones you're going to cut.

You will have to do some drilling. The old transducer mount and the old Humminbird mount will not work and the previous holes will not work. I understand that the gasket sealant works best at room temperature,so you want to finish the work on a warmish day before splashing in the water.

The factory mount for the Helix 5" (and I suspect the other sizes) is pretty low - your steering wheel is going to block the bottom third. There is a 3rd party 4" mount for this, but again, the sales folks are clueless re: sailboats and steering wheels. If you ask, they will have it (very likely). 4 more holes to drill UNLESS you have planned for this, in which case just the four for the extension.

I have a Helix 5 Chirp GPS G2 on my :macx: as well. It seems to work great, the only issue I've had is remembering how to dim it after dusk. It's easy to do just, finding the page in the settings is a pain. I installed mine with a ram mount kit. It works good but the kit came with a 5 or 6" riser, which was way to high. I ended upgetting a shorter one that is about 2" and it works well. The screen is right above the steering wheel and pivots easily.

The intended one was too high IMO but it worked ok. I got the shorter adapter so it was even with the top of the wheel while seated. An added benefit is when I remove the GPS when the boat is tied up the main sheet line nicely sits on the ram mount ball on the top of the pedestal.
