Mac 19 repower question
My Mac 19 came with its original two stroke 40hp outboard motor, which is now dead. I’d like to replace it but with a smaller outboard, given the greater weight of today’s 4 stroke outboards. I’m assuming that the boat needs to be on plane for the water ballast tank to empty (ballast plugs open of course). What horsepower size under 40 hp will sufficiently plane the boat to suck out the water ballast? Thanks.

I don't have a 19, but I do have a 26X. You only need to go about 8mph to empty the ballast tank, so I would think yours would be similar? While I have a Yamaha 70 as my main, I have a Merc 9.9 kicker. I can do hull speed with that kicker.
Today's 4-strokes are getting lighter from what they were several years ago, so you should compare weights today with your old 2-stroke.
I'm thinking a 15 would do fine on yours, or a 25 for sure.

Re: Mac 19 repower question
I had a 40hp four stroke Suzuki eng on my Mac 19 with no issue,s they have a lot more Torq than a 40hp 2 stroke
