...when you are on wifi, the Ipad is using the wifi signal to triangulate you, so the GPS part of the chip can be inactive and still give you a fix

I know we are beating a dead horse, but..........we needed to perform a maintenance flight today that took us out over the Gulf of Mexico. You will notice the altitude says GPS altitude...........

So show me (screenshot) where it says 'Turn GPS on/off' or 'Set to default' :?:
By WiFi, I assume you mean the cellular bandwidth spectrum. Otherwise, WiFi from other sources does not contain positional information. Cellular means monthly bills.
After all that, I would expect the latest(!) models of these expensive Apples to have a good gps chip built-in, and therefore render this whole argument academic - no different from a Garmin handheld, in that capacity. But any inclusion or addition of other cellular based 'improvement' must incur a specific data chunk, out of the network contract costs.
:x
Apple is usually very circumspect about providing controls (Somewhere in the control panel - System Preferences(?)). It's very bad customer relations for them when they incur higher costs on the customer, than what they're already charging. Very early adopter!

Forgive me, but I read part of the first page of the post and then just re-tuned in (didn't read the intermediary pages) thinking by now the topic must be way off the original topic, but maybe it isn't 8) . So can I conclude from the above that after 6 pages we sill don't have a consensus on if an Ipad has a GPS :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Will someone please send me a PM if this mystery is ever solved

Leading or not, the answer appears to be "has".

I've got a WIFI-only IPad_3, 32GB and it does not have a build in GPS, I use a Bluetooth receiver :!:
Like Mastreb wrote earlier in this seemingly endless discussion: IPad_3 with 4G capability have GPS circuitry imbedded in the 4G cellular-chip. Regardless if there is cell-coverage or not at your location, if the cellular-chip is turned on the GPS part works. :!:

I turn off cell ( I mostly use wi fi) and I just finished walking around the block where I live, and took my Ipad 3 with me. Google Earth is so accurate, it shows where I am as I move around inside my house. The GPS tracks me around the block. Exactly to the yard of the house on my block. Wi fi coverage only lasts to about next door or so. When I try to refresh an Internet page, it does not refresh.

Is this a political thing? Some of you are hard to convince.

Yes, I can get a GPS lock without wi-fi or cell on. I also did that while sailing with the Navimatics app, as the maps are downloaded beforehand into the IPad. Mind you, I had to pay to download the Navimatics maps, so it is not free. But $25 for the entire west coast? I paid a lot more for a lot less with my Garmin chartplotter. :o

It looks like there is some difference between the models based on continent...

Mine is a model A1403 (on back) and in software model MC756LL (64Gb VZW model black)

The iPad 3 uses a different cellular/gps chipset than the iPad's 1 & 2, so it's quite possible that the GPS power save is different between them. I have all three, so I guess I'll test and report.
