picking up at Mooring

Post by bastonjock »

Hi Guys

What technique do you use with a mac when you are on a "fore and aft" mooring, ive just got confirmation of my first mooring, its for and aft and at $550 usd a year im very happy with that.

Do you make up a mooring warp that you slip through the mooring ball eyelet and fix both ends off on the bow cleats and do the same with the stern? or is there another way?

The mooring does dry out

I use a clip on the line for quick disconnect. some of hte morrings are long though that you do not need a leader. Check and see what they recommend. The $ 45 hook is worth the price and I use it on my safety harnes teather.

thanks james,i did think about a clip for quick connect/disconnect purposes, ive also been told to cover my warp with rubber hose, apparently last year one boat broke its mooring as a result of chaffing, and it had to be a Macgregor

Buoy mooring with Mac26X

Post by Morimaro »

I used to have a mooring on the trots in The Solent off RSYC, only one ended though. I used two strops, one with a plastic sheath (water pipe) for safety. Being on a forward mooring only the boat used to charge around it like a wild thing in the tides, currents etc but although I had a bit of chaffing on the non protected rope, the rope with the sheath was OK. Being moored fore and aft the motion should be minimal.
After the RSYC mooring I moved to a River Yar mooring, fore and aft, for which I just used normal mooring ropes to cleats and there was no problem as there was virtually no boat movement.

Cheers

Mooring onto buoy for/aft

Post by Morimaro »

One thing I did find very useful in picking up the buoys (fore or aft) in the river (very fast tide and cross winds) was a permanent line between the buoys with a float in the middle, so you can pick the line up anywhere along it and then move backward and forwards along the line to attach to the buoys.

Hi Bastonjock,

I use a swinging mooring with two 18mm dia. mooring warps. One mod I made to the boat (26M) was to fit larger cleats (to accept the 18mm) to the bow and also to assist these and help avoid chafing I also fitted fairleads to the bow. I also had plastic sleeve fiited over the warps but the large size of the loops means the plastic sleeve does not actually make contact with the boat! Worth checking if you sleeve the warps. The cleats as standard are quit close to the edge of the boat.

I also use a small mooring bouy secured near the end of both warps. Makes picking them up easy with a standard boat hook.

Regards,
