Scott,
Calling me "fairly new" is the nicest thing anybody has said to me in over 60 years. Judging from your picture the Admiral and I were gunk holing the Caribbean on a Hunter 27 before you were born and we may be old enough to be your grandparents.
Matt,
I agree with Trout and just about everybody I know holds the belief that there is no such thing as a dumb question. Only dumb answers. To tell you the truth I've always been a little squeamish about the cheap rigging on the Mac and always push the clevis pins in tighter and check the cotter pins and have a general look over of the rigging before shoving off. Combine that with bouncing along at 24-25 mph under power (I have a Tohatsu 90 on my M) has made me think a time or two that it's possible the forestay could let go. So no it was not a dumb question which was validated by your own exerience of which I'm sorry to hear about your near miss.
Also to tell you the truth I'd had about 3 glasses of wine before posting my original bit of philosophy on less worry and more fun and was lamenting and feeling sorry for myself at the same time that my weekend has been ruined by pretty near gale force winds down here so wasn't in the best of moods either. So the second post this afternoon was meant to be pretty much a damage control exercise in diplomacy - and thought with that one that I'd managed a pretty fair BS attempt to cover my rear on the first diatribe.
But all in all I stand by what I wrote and we all should all try to maximize the time on the water and enjoying ourselves more, but of course not at the expense of safety.
Now I want everyone to note that according to Scott I am "Fairly New". Actually I like that a whole lot better than "JonBill". And may even switch my handle in the future. So if you see some post from "FairlyNew" in the future you'll know it's me.
Kindest Regards,
JonBill

Taking your lead from me in nearly anything would be a fools errand at best. A bad mistake at worst.
My wife and I have a 50ish friend that does the online dating thing and he calls me for relationship advice every now and again.
My wife calls it the stupid leading the dumb.
On edit, apparently you've never seen "Joe Dirt"?
