Where are you on the Google Trailer Sailer Map?

Post by Québec 1 »

Ahoy Mattees,
This guy on the Trailor sailor site set up a google map which permits us to show where are boats are! Here's his msg. Its interesting for sure!!!

Hey all,

I haven't spent much time on this. I'll continue play around with it, but maybe some others would like to start looking at it.

I opened a google account for the entire TSBB. The sign-in on google (and by default a gmail address) is:

email: [email protected] password: trailersail

THE MAP
-----------

Go to http://maps.google.com and then sign in to google with the above email/password.

Click on MY MAPS.

You will see one PUBLIC map, called TSBB. It should have one pushpin at for my location in NC.

If you click the checkbox next to the TSBB map and then click the EDIT button, you will see some markers come up which you can place on the map at your location and write your name.

You can then host your photo somewhere on the net, and attach that photo to your pushpin:

While in map EDIT mode, click your pushpin. Select RICH TEXT and you will see a list of icons. The last icon is to add a photo. Click it and enter the web address of your picture.

When you are all done editing, click SAVE and then DONE to exit the editing mode.

That's it!

The direct link to the public map is here:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8& ... 953125&z=5

********* BEWARE! ************
------------------------------------------------------
This is a group-wide email address and google sign-in! Please --- PLEASE --- don't do anything you (we) might regret.

I don't know when this google shot was taken but it shows my MacGregor on the trailer in my driveway, uncovered! It always has a tarp over it off season so they must have snapped the shot when I was getting it commisioned in the spring. Takes up the whole driveway. 8)

I can't see the map at all. When I got in earlier I noticed it had been mistakenly edited and renamed to "Capt Mikey" or something like that (no longer TSBB). But I was able to add myself and save. But it's not there at all now.

It would appear that someone who didn't know what they were doing - or perhaps DID know what they were doing - has deleted the map. All is gone. I did a search for my boat, which if the map did still exist somewhere would show up as a known 'place', and Google could not locate it... so it's toast. Shame one person can ruin it for everyone. I can't say I didn't expect it, though - Google maps is confusing to use for newbies and the password should never have been given out.

What a shame - this could have been an interesting map showing the location of all of the Mac owners - oh well - night from not so warm Florida

Perhaps Heath could integrate such a feature in to this board? That would keep things under control.

Try this.
E-mail scottatthevalley at aol.com (use the @ symbol instead of 'at' of course... I've changed this email address to prevent spam.)
P/W macgregormap

Dont click on the x in the box next to the untitled map name. That is how to delete it, I thought it was a great idea so started on up. Anyone here that wants to manage maintain or monitor it is welcome to go in and change the e-mail/ password or what ever. I dont have the time and dont have the intellectual capacity to be in charge of anything.

Hopefully someone will run with this, its a great resource.
If you do grab this, let me or let the board know.

Good idea, Scott, but folks, let's keep this one in the house, OK?

Please don't spread this to other forums, since that's how we lost the last one.

Scott, I renamed the map and also added directions for adding new places so hopefully folks won't screw it up.

To add a new place:
1 ) Go to Google Maps (http://maps.google.com)
2 ) Sign in (use the User ID and password in Scott's posting below)
3 ) Click "My Maps"
4 ) Click "Macgregor Sailors Map"
5 ) Click the "Edit" button
6 ) Navigate to the place on the map where you'd like to add a place (your anchorage, your house, whatever)
7 ) Click the little inverted teardrop icon on the top of the map Image
8 ) Move the resulting new teardrop icon ('placemark') to your place Image
9 ) Click again to 'stick' the icon to the map.
10) Replace the "Placemark" title with a title that makes sense for your place - I used the name of my boat.
11) Click "Save" over on the left.
12) Click "Done"

WARNINGS:

-- When you are editing or adding places, DO NOT change the name of the map on the left hand side. To add a new place, see the directions above, or the abbreviated directions on the left side of the map.

-- Never, NEVER, NEVER click the Image icon next to the "Macgregor Sailors Map"!! That will *kill* the entire map for everyone! (And the resulting bad karma will give your boat a horrible case of fiberglass blisters.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Other tips:
1 ) If you have to move your placemark later, just edit the map, click your placemark and drag it.

2 ) You can change your placemark icon while editing your placemark. Click the Image icon within your placemark editing window and it will give you a selection to choose from. You can also add your own icon using "My Icon", but please make sure it is 32x32 pixels or close to that size.

3 ) You can include a link to a picture by clicking the "Edit HTML" link on your new placemark.
-->NOTE: To add an image you *must* click the "edit HTML" line within your placemark - if you paste it as plain text it won't work! Also, it would be best if you limited the size of the picture.

Here's the code I used for mine:

Code: Select all

<div dir="ltr">1997 Macgregor 26X w/ Tohatsu 50 - kmclemore<br></div>
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v296/procolharum/img_0202.jpg" border="0" width="360" height="240">
Notice I limited the size by including the code width="360" height="240" within the IMG statement... this is a reasonable size for map use.

I hope that that is a "one-off" email address, Scott. If we leave it in the open on this forum, it will soon become unusable for you, due to the spam bots that harvest email address form sites like this.
