Sept 18 (?) Catalina Run being set up.
As a follow on to the posting started in the earilier Catalina "Sailist" thread, sign up here for a Mac armada invasion at the string line for the weekend starting Friday, Sept 18, (the proposed date so far).
Great location combined with great company means a great time should be had by all.
To learn more and to get up to date, read the last page of that other Catalina thread.

Re: Sept 18 (?) Catalina Run being set up.
Hello to all! I recently acquired a 26D. I would very much like to join your Catalina run. I have at least two problems. I haven't sailed in over 20 years but did quite a bit of sailing way back on a 14' Lido. Secondly ,the thought of getting into trouble out in the channel is enough to cause a "puckering" problem. Im not too bright or shy so ill ask a question. Is there a benevolent soul out there who would be willing to perhaps board my boat and assist me in getting to Catalina? The boat is in great shape and has made many trips there with its previous owner. It is equipped with a 1 year old, Tohatsu, 18 hp ,4 Stroke. It has all of the standard sails plus a 150% genoa. Im so green, perhaps you might all suggest that I find another form of entertainment but I thought I'd put it out there and see what happens.Thanx!!

Re: Sept 18 (?) Catalina Run being set up.
Well it looks like the 18th Sept so far, makes sense because the armada maxi was set up for that date anyway. We can still use the 5th as a cut off for input I think thats plenty of time for input.
Agusta Is going, leaving from MDR AT 6AM, or any agreed upon time. That would be a good time to leave so the other boats that leave from different places could meet up around 830 and probably close to mid channel, Ill look at the gps and intersect the lines from all points and see where they cross, or close to it so noone has to go way out of there way to meet.
As far as berful's problem, Im not familiar with the "D'S" PERFORMANCE, and coming from Vegas with a green crew and green boat, You will have lots of choices, by the time we get close to leaving Im sure we can find some way to accommodate. I for one and Im sure most anyone going would never leave someone not sure of the capabilities of their boat or skill to do it on their own. Right now your best option would be to leave from Long beach, that being the shortest distance across, If no one leaves from long beach you can buddy up with us from MDR. Most of the guys that leave from MDR now like to motor sail across and the speeds are most likely in line with the performance of your boat. (we have over a month to work this out) Berful I would, if I were you take your boat out to mead or Mojave, and get some stick time in before you go. Practice motor sailing (This is a tuff one for you as the heat there is almost unbearable now) Will it be just you alone or do you have a crew?
Set your boat up with the following things before you go, radio, hand held or permanent, or both, I have both, the hand held only reaches about 3-5 miles, the vhf permanent has about a 25 mile range.
A life vest for you and the crew with a light and whistle attached. A dinghy, I saw yesterday a guy and his kid rowing around in a two man sevylor, thing looked like it weighed 15 pounds if that, but they were rowing around all day and having fun. Those rafts cost about 30 bucks or so and can be used to get ashore in a pinch from the string line. Warm clothes, I know from Vegas that sounds silly but, it gets a little chilly in the evening and morning out here. A good deep cycle battery, having an 18hp motor that you pull start, a good battery can be over looked, but your lights and most important the radio needs one to keep working. If your boat is equipped with a Bimini, thats great, not just for the sun protection but the dew at night and in the morning can be pretty substantial.
Flashlights, hand bilge pump, and money come in real handy too. I use the bilge pump to pump out water from the dinghy (dew again) Bring a few common tools too.
getting into trouble isnt going to be a lasting experience if you go with us, but if you want some more piece of mind, join seatow, they would actually tow your boat all the way to the ramp if something happened out there for free. I think as long as the boats sound, its safer to cross the channel with a few other macs, then it is to tow the boat anywhere on the road. This goes for anyone that wants to go. no one would be left behind, we all look after each other.

Re: Sept 18 (?) Catalina Run being set up.
lets get some more boats going, Ill approach mac for some perks if we get 10 boats or more. Dont think mac would be interested in getting involved with 5 guys sitting on the beach under a mac banner getting a little tipsy, although that would be fun too.
I was thinking of a dinghy tour too, theres all kinds of places near the mooring to explore, we dont have to snorkel but some great photo ops can be had.
Click on the pix's, they get bigger
This is inside the isthmus harbor not to far away from the string line. Ted here, just spotted a stingray and was getting ready to go down and check it out,
later when he told me about it,I warned him about the crocodile hunter's ordeal.

This too is in the harbor, clear water and a little spooky, same place as above but out a little farther from shore

This outside the Isthmus harbor, towards Avalon about three miles away, Lots of kelp and neato things to look at. As well as wild life on shore. shark fishing any one?
Just off the island and even near shore, you can encounter many many different types of marine life, I have had dolphins come up to the dinghy before as well as large schools of yellowtail breeze by. Marlin, sharks, and of course seals can be spotted at times. We even got into a pod of pilot whales once, that was a thrill

Re: Sept 18 (?) Catalina Run being set up.
AYA16. thanx for taking some time to respond to my request. Ill take all of your advise as far as equipment etc.(actually I have everything you mentioned and then some except a dingy) Im hopeful that I have a solution in that "pokerrick" and I are meeting up to have a look at my boat etc. Rick is a local so there is some hope that he and I will make the trip together. FYI my boat is a 1989. I believe that was the last year for the "D" as the "X" replaced it in 1990. The boat has been greatly improved by its two previous owners and I hope to do the same.Im retiring in 4 or 5 more years and will be moving up to a newer/larger boat at that time. To your point about stick time I have had the boat slipped at Lake Mead for the past two months and have logged some serious motoring time but not a whole lot of sailing as the doldrums are upon it this time of year. I sure hope to make the trip and get the oportunity to meet up with you. Thanx again!! (Ill keep you posted as I progress)

Re: Sept 18 (?) Catalina Run being set up.
Ok its the 5th of August and looks like the 18th of sept we go, I didnt think we would get much interest, but no matter how many boats go we still have fun. We still have over a month before we leave. So the boats that are going for sure, hows this sound, we leave MDR at 6 am fri 18th of sept. If any one goes and going to be late for that start off, well thats why the mac has a big engine. Those that want to leave from Long beach or other points Ill find a point in the channel we can meet up before we hit the island. Im going to reserve the string line on the 18th of Aug. Im bringing my larger dinghy 9.5 and the 2 hp honda, karen says she wants to tour some in the dinghy Saturday. We will be bringing some steaks to BBQ ashore Saturday as well as lots of new tall tales.
Mike Inmon could you let us know if the maxi armada is going to happen or not? Maybe thats what is going on as far as others not committing for this. It doesnt matter if two boats go or 100, The only reason for knowing the numbers is where we decide to stay. Too many boats and it would be hard for all of us to be at the isthmus, so we would have to go to cat harbor.

We might have a hunter 26 going with us, I met them at the temp dock last weekend, nice people, Mike and Cindy from the mast up. Really nice and roomy boat with a water ballast system too.
They have never crossed to the island before, and want to try it. That hunter seems a little wider then our macs.
