Saw this thing two weeks ago while sailing off Camp Pendleton in California.

Image

It's exactly what it looks like: Some sort of amphibious tank motoring along with a tender. They gave us a good hard look, but never came over. Chartplotter didn't indicate that we were in restricted waters.

Sorry--didn't get any part of the Mac in the photo.

That would make for an interesting insurance claim if you were to collide with one of those.

It's a AAVP7A1 "P9" - an amphibious troop carrier, not a tank

Actually no, it was one of these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expedition ... ng_Vehicle

Apparently the replacement for the AAVP7A1, and not yet in service.

Ok. Now that we know what it is let's get to the analysis:

Expedtionary Fighting Vehicle
Manufacturer General Dynamics
Unit cost US$22.3 million

Weight 38 short tons (34.5 metric tons)
Length 10.67 m (35 ft)
Width 3.66 m (12 ft)
Height 3.28 m (10.7 ft) (turret roof)
Crew 3 crew
Passengers 17 fully equipped Marines (EFVP)
7 command crew (EFVPC)

Armor ceramic/composite
Primary armament 30 mm MK44 cannon (EFVP)
7.62 mm machine gun (EFVPC)
Secondary armament 7.62 mm machine gun (EFVP)
none (EFVPC)
Engine MTU Friedrichshafen MT 883 Ka-524 diesel engine
2,702 hp (2,016 kW) (water), 850 hp (635 kW) (land)
Power/weight 34.48 bhp/ton
Operational range land: 523 km (325 miles)
water: 120 km (74 miles)
Speed road: 72.41 km/h (45 mph)
water: 46 km/h (28.6 mph) (water)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Macgregor 26M
Manufacturer Macgregor Yacht Corporation
Unit cost US$40,000

Weight 1.25 short tons (empty)
Length 7.87m (25 ft 10 in)
Width 2.39 m (7 ft 10 in)
Height 10.97 m (36 ft) (mast top from waterline)
Crew 1 crew (Skipper...or Admiral depending on who wears the pants in the family)
Passengers 5 overweight beer guzzling buddies (guys day out)
1 spouse, 2 kids, 1 kids friend, and the dog (family outing)

Armor 3/16" thick fiberglass hull
Primary armament Water Guns (for the kids)
Empty Beer Cans (for the guys)
Engine Outboard, 9HP for some...50 HP average...75+HP for those that feel they have to over compensate for something...
Operational range land: 290 km (180 miles) ... best guess at distance one tank of gas can take a V-6 towing this beast
water: 80 km (50 miles) ... estimate with 12 gal gas
Speed road: 105 km/h (65 mph)
water: 32 km/h (20 mph) (water) ... no ballast, lightly loaded, (exceptions for those with compensation issues)

-----------------------------------------------------

So which machine wins this battle of the water beasts?

Just imagine how many :macm: 's you could buy for $22 mil. You could land a whole division of Marines with that. Now that would be a photo! I bet the military would still try to stuff a full on Verado on them.

Roughly 1000 bare bones Mac Ms. However, I'm sure Roger would discount for an order that large!
