mdr alert, high winds next 3 days

Post by aya16 »

Got up this morning and news was talking about 95 mph winds in la county last night. I drove over to my boat in the mast up storage at MDR. Many small boats were tipped over or blown into other boats, no macs tipped over.

There are some problems, here's a list of what I found:

Space 169- and171, you guys have a catamaran blown into your boats, space 171 rudders are caught in that cat, 169 your boat stopped the cat, doesn't look any damage.

space 161 jib cover ripped, tire cover blown off

space 226 Bill your boat looks OK except its parked over the line next to you, doesn't look like it blew there.

space 229 your boat is where it should be but the tongue is sticking straight up in the air

space 76 name of boat san cerra wind, your boat is in trouble, your jib has deployed half way and in the 17mph winds right now are blowing your boat and trailer pretty bad. Its rocking side to side every time the jib gets wind, another night like last night and your boat may go over.

space 74 boat name paramour, the tri hull next to you has blown into your boat, doesn't look to be any damage but its up against you.

space 34 blue M looks new, up against the fence near the exit. Your boat was blown out into the drive area, straight out, no damage and did not hit other boats
I pushed your boat back, as well as chocked front and rear with the blocks you had.

I would have fixed most of your boats, but I was worried about damage I couldn't see, and you guys would need to take pix's if there is damage. The only boat in harms way is san cerra wind space 76, the jib needs to be rolled back up soon.

My boat had two boats up against it, one blew over into my rigging, the other the trailer rolled up under my boat, no damage as far as I could tell in the dark.

Remember the winds are supposed to last 3 or 4 days and nights.

Thanks Mike.

I really appreciate your report.
Living so far from the boat bugs the crap out of me just for these reasons.
I'm not due to go down this weekend due to other commitments.

If you do make some scouting trips over the next few days, please keep a sharp eye out for our boat.
I know you would do so anyhow - without Sue and I asking .
Knowing you are looking out is a great relief.

As far as being over the white line, yes, I park like that on purpose to keep some room available for waxing the port side of the hull.

Thanks Mike.

Crazy, here in Newport Beach, no wind so far about 24 hrs after that report, quiet and still. I'll go to my boat anyway and check lines, furler, cover etc. We are only 40 miles from u. I'm going sailing this PM with a demo. Hope he likes scary wind, if, if.

Hello Mike,

Thank you very much for your report. My wife and I will be down there early this afternoon just to check out our boat even though if seems that it is OK. It is in space 173 - Chapter 2.

Bill, I'll post additional findings upon my return home.

Mike, thank you again.

Bill your ok than, the wind just blew the wax off your boat :) I always check your boat when I go down there. have to wear sun glasses though, its so shiny.

173 cool no problems from what I saw in the dark, your neighbors not doing so well 169-171

Been on your demo's mike, reminds me of surfing, where you lean over so far you can drag your hand in the water 8)

This is the second time my neighbor's boat has blown over and tangled up in my rigging, its a nice little boat. I wouldn't want to tow that boat in a heavy cross wind, it tips so easy.

Hope san cerra wind reads this stuff, space 76, he's really in danger of blowing over as well as blowing his jib out. Of all the boats I wish I could have helped was his, but I didn't want to climb on it in the dark with it rocking side to side like it was. Again I could have pulled all the other boats away from the mac's I listed, but if there is damage I didn't want to disturb them.

Had experience with mast up people last year in this sort of thing, they wont touch the boats that are in trouble, they just call the owners. Any boats backed into the fence by the ramp are going to get blown into the drive, if they are not chocked. space 34 new blue mac m, your boat should be ok, but may blow over the wood you have blocking the tires. Your boat was easy to push by myself back, so the wind could move it with ease.

A demo with MIke Inmon at the Long Beach Boat Show in 1995 finally convinced me to pull the trigger on a new Mac.

Great work, Mike, in the Mast Up area - - - what a guy :!: :!: 8)

Well, I got a late start going to MDR and didn't arrive until 5 PM.

Thanks Mike for your message about my boat, I checked as well and there was no damage at all.
One boat by the fence to the parking lot was still on its side with the mast blocking the driveway between the first and second rows. It seemed that all the other problems still needs to be addressed.

Bill, your boat is just fine.

Thanks Finn.

We also have the habit to look out for other fellow Mac friends boats when ever we're there.
News travels fast in the Mac community.
A great bunch of folks.

So now we have a new topic, do we store our boats with ballast in or out? :D

Serious, don't store the boat with ballast in, the smell alone after a while will be horrible, as well as the marine growth that would start in your tank.
Let alone the trailer isn't made for that kind of weight.

well my nice blue cover for my console is gone (blown away I guess), my large blue tub for washing my boat that hung on the trailer got blown away.
I put one of my neighbors little sail boat's tongue on the ground (off the folding tongue jack) to keep the boat from rolling under my trailer again, I tied the other boat to the electric pole next to mine to keep it from blowing over onto my boat, (again for the 2nd time). can some one tell me how a loose line from that other boat can tie itself into several knots around my rigging just from the wind?

You know just for fun, when I'm at my boat, I walk the storage area, (guess I don't want to rush going home) to look at all the neat sailboats there, and its just automatic to look at all the mac's. there are so many mac's, we should name the place macville. Even though I own a mac, I still get a kick out of looking at all of them. Has any one seen the little mac, that looks just like a new M? Has the two black stripes and all, Had to do a double take first time I saw that boat, looks like an M that's about half our size.

So far have to give hard crab best in show.

We should have one storage row just for the mac's

Mike,
That's a Mac 19.
Cute little 40hp bugger, but kinda small inside.
We looked at one in San Diego before we bought the M, and the inside height was a deal killer for us.

Keeping the boat in great shape is a lot of hard work.
So far, I'm willing and able to do what it takes.
I hope I can keep it up.
Thanks.
