Wow seriously? Something as silly as that causing as much drama as a 'discussion' on politics or religion? Yikes. I didn't know. A friendly and funny debate is one thing, but to near shut down a forum is another. Sorry for even joking about it. I don't want my head ripped off, that's for sure!kmclemore wrote:Yes, not only have such things been discussed before, but the vitriol from one such discussion almost closed down this board.StarSpun wrote:I'm a newb....aaaand I've figured many have seen it before. Edit. NM....found it.

This should be an interesting read....
We joke about it, but really, folks can get pretty territorial about their choice in boats and some pretty heated and nasty arguments can ensue, and have. As a mod, I'd rather we didn't play with fire, if you please.

Yeah, believe it or not, it has happened. I guess after spending tens-of-thousands of bucks on a boat folks can feel a real need to defend their choice, and quite frankly it got entirely out of hand. So... let's not stoke the fires of discontent? Friendly, fun discussions are great, and we do joke amongst each other about whose boat is better, but let's all try to keep it at that level.StarSpun wrote:Wow seriously? No kidding....
Well I'm thinking it's kinda common....
When I belonged to an RV forum, similar arguments broke out about Class As vs. 5th wheels. Holy moly....it was RIDICULOUS.
I finally just left because it was a bunch of snowbirds with nothing better to do than shoot other people down. Amazing, they are down south in the sun, and they sit online with nothing better to do! Bah. I thought boaters were more easy going. Tsk tsk.

They generally are, but as our mommies told us, it only takes two to make an argument.StarSpun wrote:I thought boaters were more easy going. Tsk tsk.

Re: 26X vs 26M
Thats a very bias oppinion made by an X owner LOL for every one on his oppinions on the M I could direct an opposit for the X
both boats have their issues & do have their good & bad points also the floor plan he has posted on the M is not exact the M has a shorter cockpit but a bigger cabin
. I've been on & sailed both boats & much prefer my M
but to each his/her own ! . the stand up head is nicer on the X . but just how much time do u spend in a head unless ur an Admiral !!
J
PS OK I got broad shoulders bring it on Lady's

Re: 26X vs 26M
Meh. The X and the M are more similar to one another than they are to any other boats in the water. The differences between them are frankly minor preferences, and to be quite frank, just about all of the design decisions about the interior are derived from the difference between a centerboard and a daggerboard, each of which have their various advantages and disadvantages.
I'd probably prefer the X, but I wanted new so I have an M. In any case, they're both better boats than any of the other options available to me for my criteria.

And that's the bottom line.

Re: 26X vs 26M
I am not a Mac-owner yet. I have a daycruiser that will be advertised for sale when the spring arrives in Norway, and then I go looking. Mac or Odin, that is my goal.
Huge thank you to Starspun for an informative link about differences between X & M, even though it appear clearly to be written by a X-owner...
Starspun's link made me curious. I would say that the unfoldable ladder in the M's appears to be a result of experienced lack of cockpit floor strength in the X's. What could otherwise have caused the decision about making the ladder unfoldable?
None of these make me worried about owning a M or X. My choice will be driven by the objects that appear after my daycruiser finds a new owner.
Let us all hope for a windy outdoors (but silent indoors...) summer. Once again, thank you for an outstanding forum!

Fornøyd seiling MacTommy!
So spring should be around June for you this year? What are the two boats you mentioned going for in this area?

Re: 26X vs 26M
Thanks a lot, Crikey. "God seiltur" is a more common expression in norwegian, but yours will also work.Crikey wrote:Fornøyd seiling MacTommy!
Spring in Norway is varying. This year, I hope to hit the water somewhere in the next three weeks. Easter is common, hope to be early this year. So when the warmer weather arrives, and the market for boats raise for the season, the daycruiser will be sold. I will convert into trailersailing instead. Fuel prices are insane here in Norway, almost 2,4$ for a liter of gas. (That adds up to 9.60 dollars each gallon...) So when buying a bigger boat, I will also get the luxury comfy option of travelling by the wind.
Based on reviews on this excellent forum, I start to understand the differences between different years and models of the MacGregor 26. And we have some of these here in Norway as well, even though I believe the brand is without an exclusive importer these days. No big deal for me, I will buy second hand and also import spareparts and gadgets myself. Not decided yet what is my favorite, the X or the M. But the M's better sail efficiency attracts me, no doubt.
The third alternative is the polish built Odin 820.

Anyone with experience or opinions to share about these boats, compared to the Mac's? I would be thankful if so.

Re: 26X vs 26M
The Odin is a beautifully constructed boat. I went on one two years ago at our Toronto boat show. I'm not sure if the specifications I dug up (below) reflects the weight without options, but the memory of my discussion with the representative left me with the impression that it was much heavier than the MacGregor in its best configuration. Also quite a bit more expensive, here in Canada. Still very nice though.
