Advice on survey etc selling MacX

I just listed my 1998 MacGregor X for sale in the classified ads here. She's on her trailer in Toronto, Canada.

I was wondering what advice people have here for two issues. The engine is in excellent shape, runs well and looks like showroom condition with the cover off; but there's no hours counter on the Mercury Mariner 50 HP (from what I can tell) so I suppose I just have to say it's in good shape and hasn't been used overly much. Any other ideas?

I had a marine survey done about four years ago when I bought the boat. I'm guessing that survey would be considered out of date by now. Should I get another survey or leave this up to the buyer (if they want one)?

There's no hour meter on our NIssan 50 either, but when I had it service last year, the dealer was able to input some sort of code that resulted in the tach registering as if it were an hour meter -- so he could conclude that the motor had approximately 200 hours on it. If there's a Merc dealer near you, you might inquire about that.

I don't know the custom in Canada, but in the US the survey report needs be commissioned by the buyer - as it will typically be required in order to obtain insurance.

If the buyer wants a survey it is at his expence. A survey usually doesn't cover the engine but a person can have a certified mechanic to ck it out and do a compression test.
Usually a survey isn't required on a 1998 Mac.X from a sailer buyer that has owned them and somewhat knowledge in all things to look for.
If your boat is in good shape there should be no reason to obtain the cost for a survey and another cost for a Certified Mechanic.
Watch out for the person that says I will need a surveyer and will cost me$$$$ but if I don't get one how much lower can I steal your boat.

I'd be in shock if an experienced boat mechanic couldn't tell how many hours are on your engine from the electronics inside. Surveys are up to the buyer, and often mandatory before an insurer will insure a used boat. Good Luck!

Having a Insurance company requireing a Mac. here in Florida does not require a survey. I would think it is a State to State issue.

Suzuki Milage Check.

Our 2000 Suzuki DF50 has a way to check milage by it's pre-start sequence. When you insert and turn the key to engage electronics (not to start) there is a sequesnce of lights that come on. Oil, Temp, and the RPM gauge moves, etc.

In the back of our manual, there is a quick list that tells you what each sequence means.
For example: Oil Light (on), Temp Light (flash), RPMs (3000) = 500 hours
Crazy but it works.

I got mine last year in Toronto area as well. I did not know about boat survey at that time, so I did not ask for one. I insured the boat with no problems, without survey.
If the boat is in good order, for what is equipped with, it is at a good price. She will be gone soon.

Rough orders of magnitude....a boat of that vintage sells for 12-15k, and a survey is 500-1000. Not too many people will spend such a high percentage of the price on a used boat.
