1976 V 21 Project

Post by TIMBOAT2 »

I picked up a 1976 V21 last November and have spent a lot of time on cosmetics and cleaning(and cleaning and cleaning...). I have also repaired and restored the covers to the companion way as they were ready to break in half. The most fun has been the exterior wood that was degrading. That took some sanding, and sanding and sanding. The most work has been the rudder. Anyway, it is starting to come along and i was hopeing some of you could send pictures of your V 21's of both interior and exterior layouts so i can make more work for myself. :D I can't post pictures until i have posted a couple more times, then i will. I thank you in advance as i know a lot of you have been covered in dust and muck with your V's as well. I look foreward to seeing "what you got"
Thanks,

i'd love to share some pics with my interior but she is stripped down bare...only room for some kids toys and a place for a 4 yr old to nap, other than storing a small grill and sails i won't be using my cabin for anything.

She's set up to be as light weight as possible for speed, i'm thinking about replacing all standing rigging with amsteel to lose even more weight...takes minimal tools to splice synthetic line compared to braied stainless and also light weight enough to carry spares on a reel.

anyway, you'll find more accomidatoins in an outhouse than you'll find in my boat.

Hopefully these other guys will have some pictures to post up for you.

For the interior of the Venture 21 less is more.

Mine had a toilet port side when i purchased her. Unless you are 4 ft tall you couldn't even sit on the thing.

I suppose a portable toilet right inside the hatch would work but...i'm not that friendly with anyone.

The use of the cabin of the venture 21 for me would be for storage and maybe occasionally as a tent. The sink is nice if you are on a lake and occasinally get muddy shoes.

The best mod i found for the cabin of my venture 21 was purchasing a fixed keel Catalina 22.

Venture for speed, Catalina for anything other than solo and camping.

Venture for speed? I have a new 1972 21' or 22'; not sure yet and that is what I was thinking that it would be some fun. I know it won't point like a keel boat but it's a trade off. I'll let you know when I get her on the water in a few months. I did get a copy of "fix it and sail" and it looks right in line with my boat.

Thanks guys,
The interior had already gone to pot so i will look at fix it and sail. This boat will never be a blue water sailer but i will do my best to see she is not an eyesore either and that is why i was asking for "input". A bare bonz boat can go in a lot of directions and I have seen some very smart ideas on this site. :)

Here are some pictures of my V21. Like yourself I have spent far more than the boat is worth enjoying every hour, sanding and polishing all gelcoat, new wood, sand blasted and powdercoat on trailer, running rigging and much more, everything that I could think of. I will only have a trailerable boat so I can work on it at home having my shop close by. My wife and I have made two trips to the North Chanel of Lake Huron and many other trips to Lake Michigan and Erie on the V21. I recently bought a much larger boat to accomadate a newborn daughter(Ericson 25) and I am selling the Venture. See Craigslist, AnnArbor Mi. if interested. (more pictures of details if interested) The name of the boat came from the conditions of mine and my wifes thyroids, easily removable.

look at the sail area of the venture 21 and campare it to that of other similar production 21-22ft boats...then compare the weights...the V21 has about the same sail sq footage as the v22 and much less weight, especially gutted

I'm an extreme novice to sailing but on my first sail in 5-10mph winds on my W/21 (first time ever sailing i might add) I was amazed at how quick she was moving down wind.

when i noticed i has a slow leak allowing water to come in to the storage area under the V berth i immedatly had to turn back up wind to get to the ramp

In a narrow channel she pointed very well going upwind, have no idea what degree up wind but she did so with very little effort.

The biggest issue was getting her to slow down before i hit the ramp.

I have no motor and only an oar for alternate propulsion and have no intention of considering a motor simply to keep the weight down.

The battery to run my bilge and all LED navigation/anchor lights is a lawn mower battery keep charged with a 40w solar panel.

weght reduction is the name of the game.

my pointing ablility may vary from other V/21 boats as i have had to build a new keel for mine. So the foil is much different from the production keel.

Thanks stone_love and youllsee,
I like your bucket sink and netting for the hatches. I have looked at your pictures and movies several times and can incorperate some into my boat. Hey stone-love did you get any pictures of any of your efforts. What did the leak end up being from?
Thanks,

The leak came from the hull right where the front of the keel trunk meets the hull. It looks like she hit something at one time or the keel cable broke and caused the damage. A PO had tried to cover the area...which worked visually but didn't keep water out.

I have her repaired and will be sailing tomorrow. Not on my ideal lake but on a lake where I will be working this week so I can hopefully get some good use out of her
