Mounting kicker

I would like to mount Honda 9.9 outboard to back up my 50 hp Honda main. Very little room. Has anyone done this?

Installing a motor mount on an X is fairly straightforward. I believe mine is a Fulton. When I trailer with the kicker mounted, I pull the mount all the way up. When I'm motoring with the big engine, or sailing, I have to lower the mount partway, so that I can tilt the kicker up enough to keep its prop from dragging in the water. I started out using a longshaft 3.5 2 stroke as a kicker, but switched to a 2.5 4 stroke with regular shaft length. It's worked fine, and its 28 pound weight is manageable for manually transferring on and off the mount, without having to resort to a rope and pulley system.

Thanks Chinook, that's helpful info. We are considering a kicker for the dinghy. I'm looking at small light low hp but wife thinks we need an 8 hp because the boat is rated for it. She doesn't understand the weight significance of dis/mounting as she won't be the one doing that anyway.

BTW - what brand is your kicker? I've been seeing a lot of dissatisfied reviews of the small late model Merc & Tohatsu...

Chinook ,do you have to cut out any of the interior liner ? My etec 90 was alot lighter than the 90 four strokes so I'm kinda using that to rationalize a Honda b.f 8 or 9.9 .both of which supposedly hit hull speed at little more than a litre per hour .so for dry tortuga run or bikini crossing it would come in handy .guess I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too .

I had Todd at BWY install the mount, but I don't believe the liner posed problems. I'm pretty sure the removable vertical panel at the rear of the king berth gives direct access to the interior of the hull. My kicker is a 2.5 hp 4 stroke Suzuki and I've been really happy with it. Starts right away, runs smoothly, has a reverse gear, and seems to be a well designed motor. I especially like the twist throttle on the steering handle. My old Nissan 2 stroke had a throttle control lever on the cowling, which was inconvenient. I primarily use the kicker to run around in the dinghy, and secondarily, while trolling for salmon in the Mac. At 28 lbs, it's not too heavy for me to transfer to the dinghy and back onto the mount. I virtually never trail the dinghy with the motor attached to it, and so am transferring it to and from the mount fairly often. It can be a tricky operation on bouncy water, and I always worry about dropping it, especially when returning it to the mount. It pushes my 9.5 foot inflatable at a decent speed, but not on plane. It can move the Mac at 4 to 5 knots in calm conditions, but struggles in big chop and headwind. As far as an emergency backup motor goes, I've always considered it of marginal value, better than nothing but not by much. It would get me somewhere in flat conditions, but I'd have to regularly refill the internal fuel tank. In rough conditions it wouldn't be worth bothering with, but then, I'd probably be sailing. It would come in handy getting me around once I reached protected waters and getting into a dock.

Apparently if u have a 4 stroke u need to buy one designed for 4 strokes because of their torque they r a little more wider & a lot more money , so I,ll be waiting to find one on sale

No actually they state because of excess torq on 4 strokes
example my 6hp merc weighs in @ 57# , I can buy a 60# brkt up 8hp 2 strokes only , west marine sells the same brkt next size up 85# 10hp four strokes or 15hp two strokes , but after reading some reviews on this on the net , people r saying these brkt,s twist with the torq from the 4 strokes & just r not strong enough , if u check out the more costly 4 stroke brkt,s there two sliding adjusting brkt,s r made of two U -channel brkt,s with a wider stance & wider mounting plate as to the cheaper ones r only two 1/4" thick X 1 1/2" wide alum. flat bar 1/4" apart, so considering the torq my little 6hp merc has & the weight of my boat I,m thinkin that brkt is gonna give before my boat starts to turn & thats where most of the stress on the brkt will be when turning the boat especially on a windy day, the reason I went with 6hp 57# eng. over a 3.5hp 39# eng. was so as I would have an emg. back-up in a pinch , so gotta play the waiting game & the price is right ! , with the weather we have been gettin there,s no rush although this wk-end has turned out great, gotta start gettin her ready for the MMOR
