Todd,
What has been your learning experience with the M on Lake P? I motored over to Madisonville and the T? river before coming back to the desert.

Re: New Orleans/Lake Pontchartrain Winter/Spring Sailing
We are moving to MS close to Hattiesburg the second week of August and then going to Destin FL to get open water scuba certified during the last week of Aug. If anyone in the area wants to meet up for a sailing weekend after Aug. I'm game.

3rd year at Pontchartrain, thinking of taking a waterway trip from Industrial Canal to Gulfport or Pass Christian, saw X parked at Longreach YC, anybody else in the area and getting on the water?

We live over in Mobile, AL. We want to plan a weekend trip sailing around the Biloxi/Gulfport area for a weekend. To save time, we would probably trailer over to Ocean Springs to launch. It seems like everything we do revolves around food...so our goal is to spend the night at one of the marina's next to a casino and have dinner there. ...considering the Hard Rock in Biloxi. ...just food for thought!

FlyboyTR,
Probably I would need to trailer my boat to Ocean Springs and it's a very long rig. I need to check out launch ramps and rv parking but from what I know about the area I am interested in checking it out. Yesterday sailed from Seabrook Bridge to Southshore Marina and had lunch at the Blue Crab. Breezy day, doing 6.5 kts with jib. Ballast was in!

Re: New Orleans/Lake Pontchartrain Winter/Spring Sailing
2017 update. Arrived with Fast Sunday in tow from Chula Vista, CA to some bad news. The Seabrook railroad bridge is out of commission since Dec 16 and projected to be down until July. This cuts off Lake Pontchartrain sailing and also no slips available over there. Haven't launched boat after being here a month. Finally a 26X, Tumbleweed, launched but got discouraged about the bridge and left. It is @17 miles by GICW to sail on Lake Borgne. Now considering a move somewhere within a 100 miles, close to good sailing. Any suggestions?

What about Marina Del Ray or DeZaire Marina on the Tchefuncte River on the north side of Lake Pontchartrain?

Hew Newell it was nice meeting you we are S/V tumbleweed. Did you get my contact information? My wife left it on your R/V in not I can pm you. We are going to try and make the trip to the missippi island's soon if y'all want to tag along. Yes the bridge being closed was very upsetting we didn't do much. Did catch a 4 ft garfish last night on rod and reel. That was fun

Re: New Orleans/Lake Pontchartrain Winter/Spring Sailing
Thanks for pm. Have made 2 trips east on GICW, sailing with jib and main in good wind. Motored down a channel through a gate towards Challmette then found the gate closed upon return. By tele I talked them into opening it. Things went a little wild when oncoming tidal rush turned the boat sideways in the narrow channel, then 5 guys in fishing boat caught on the other side of the gate came crashing through. No harm no foul, so was able to return to slip just fine.Bayou wrote: Did you get my contact information? My wife left it on your R/V in not I can pm you. Info: The GICW going south from MRGO is closed permanently by a fixed seawall. It may be possible to drop mast and enter Lake Borgne, then re-enter the channel on the other side.
My mom used to warn me about Chiggers (insects) in LA, I finally found out the hard way what she meant.

I would suggest Corpus Christi Bay, but that's a stretch for "within 100 miles". Have you considered Toledo Bend Lake on the Texas/La. border? I haven't been there in a couple decades, but sailing/boating used to be good.Newell wrote: Now considering a move somewhere within a 100 miles, close to good sailing. Any suggestions?

I keep my X in a slip in Mandeville, LA and sail the Pontch almost every weekend. Not sure what you need but if you are looking to keep your boat in a slip for a bit and sail the lake the marina I am in has many available and would prob rent on a daily basis. The thing about the Pontchartrain is on the north shore, if the wind is bowing from the south it can build up dome chop due to it only being 15 feet deep.

Thanks, have been to Mandeville and Madisonville several trips. Moving boat to the Northshore with 40' RV is more permanent than my time here permts.

Re: New Orleans/Lake Pontchartrain Winter/Spring Sailing
Wrapping up this NOLA visit, our annual thing. Made 2 long distance (for me) trips into Lake Borgne stayed overnight and sailed the lake and motor-sailed the GICW. Passed 1 sailboat transiting the waterway but no others on the water. Yesterday sailing solo running off-the-wind it got somewhat wild, with winds out of the southeast in the high teens. This was fast sailing for me 7+ knots much of the time. Then it rained. Got soaked but got back to my slip okay. Borgne is great place to sail and fish.
Will try and check out "considered Toledo Bend Lake on the Texas/La. border? " on the way home.

Re: New Orleans/Lake Pontchartrain Winter/Spring Sailing
5th year on Lake Pontchartrain? Wow time is sailing bye. Have crossed to Mandeville, motored up to LaCombe Bayou and returned to the Industrial Canal, crossing both ways by sail on the same tack each way, great winds. Have seen zero Macs this year? A large snake (Water?) tried to enter my motor well drain when I was washing down the back porch. Looked like the passageway got too narrow at about 10" in, and he/she backed out.
