So on day 1 (yesterday) of a planned 7 day trip the wire cable that runs through the roller and attached to the bail at the mast snapped right at the swage. (To be clear, the cable broke). So now the rolling part doesn't work, and my clew hangs flopping with the weight of the roller. The tack is sort of held back on the boom by the roller end, but I really have no way of tensioning the sail as-is. We are continuing our trip anyways - today we motored into the wind and then ran with genoa poled out.
Would like to do two things:
1). Figure out best way to use mainsail for rest of the trip. I have stock sail with bottom bolt rope, so could perhaps remove the bolts on the roller assembly and take it off. I have no outhsul cleat, but could maybe poach one off the port side of my mast (since genoa is on a roller). Or I could keep gimping along with the loose boom roller and only use during light winds when I think I want a bit of a baggy sail anyways.
2). Determine what to do longer term. I don't have any local sailing hardware or fixer types, but could possibly find someone to replace the wire cable that holds the roller above the boom. I don't really know how it is attached to the end of the boom as it sort of just disappears into the curved SS section. My other thought is to buy a lazy jack system, slides and mast gate and go with that. Any other ideas?
(I tried putting some photos on a website to link here but haven't been able to figure out how to do so from my phone.)
Boom roller broke, now what?!

I don't get it, where on the 26 M is there a roller? Where on the boom is there a roller? What does this mean?
Are you talking about the outhaul?

Are you talking about the outhaul?. He has described it and has an album of pictures in an earlier post.
Man, that sucks. I don't know anyone else using that furler.

Or maybe remove the roller and just anchor the tack and clew fittings, and sail it loose-footed? For now, at least?BOAT wrote:OH ,K9Kampers wrote:KootsChewt has a roller furling main on hisBOAT wrote:I don't get it, where on the 26 M is there a roller? Where on the boom is there a roller? I get it now,
Okay, that's really bad huh?
Crap, that's really bad luck - does the boom have a slot for a bolt rope? Does that furler use the stock boom with modifications? If so maybe he can just remove the furler part and put the sail right into the slot in the boom like a regular boat??
Man, that sucks. I don't know anyone else using that furler.I fell bad for Chewt
(He may have brought that up - I didn't re-read the whole thread.

Re: Boom roller broke, now what?!
I think it is the stock boom as it has the slot in it. I had a look in the 26M manual this am and noted that I'm only missing two items, both of which I might be able to jury-rig an alternative. I don't have the "ears" with Bolt above the gooseneck, and I don't have an outhaul cleat or padeye. I do have some random hardware with me but no drill, but there are some seemingly random holes at the end of the boom I might be able to make use of.
Edit: I think I'd need to remove the roller part though too in order to try the stock setup. Will post back later today or tomorrow with what I tried
