Trekka is in the collection of the Maritime Museum of British Columbia in Victoria. She was on display, with masts etc. removed, at a local department store. Unfortunately, there was no information provided about the boat and its offshore adventures.

Ouch that's sad.

Even worse would be some idiot dropping one of those cast iron outboards overboard...who was the jerk who kept doing it on this forum????

dragged this old thread up again, i have spent the last few years wandering the "boat design" wasteland, and at last feel i am getting really close to what my ultimate design would be.
lots of lengthy e mail correspondence with many N.A's around the world- even more sketches and dreams.
still sailing our :macm:
but i do want something more.
-better sailing performance,
- better motoring performance
- bigger than the mac, and better appointments
-easier to step and strike the mast and gear when sailing
-still EASILY trailerable
more traditional/salty looks

i think we are there.
plan to start building in the near future- awaiting final drawings from the NA
but will never get rid of my :macm: - in fact, actually thinking about doing a complete rig re-design on it.

Personally I would try and get a hurricane damaged M or X and use that as the starting point for a bigger / better boat, gee they have cut Wild Oats 11 (100 foot super maxi that has won Sydney to Hobart many times and holds the record time) in half at least twice I know of to change things, so adding a few 3 feet wouldnt be an issue, and maybe in half down the middle to get it to absolute maximum legal road trailerable width.

With some work and $$$ you could make something brilliant for lots less than building from scratch.

I have thought of this many times, but even cyclone damaged X & M's still sell for over $10,000Au, so not really feasible in Australia.

Bigger / Better foils is the very first place I would start if you want to improve sailing ability

Follow two brothers build and sail their 48ft cat.
The build: http://sailsurfroam.com/thevessel
The adventure: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6g9l4 ... nfg/videos

Now we just need someone to kit a trailer sailor 8'6" beam, 28-30ft.

yea its old i know- sorry for dragging this back,
but i have been pursuing this dream for so long now, thought i would just update a bit.

The build is going to be foam core epoxy and glass,
33' LOA, 10' beam- we can trailer here at 10' with just an annual permit.
still easily trailerable, water and permanent ballast.
more traditional lines, a proper shower and head, proper galley, small wood stove( for our climate) freezer/fridge, just more space in general.
Large, uncluttered cockpit, lots of space for day sailing, or fishing.

I have opted for a cat ketch with balanced lug rigs.
traditional rigs, That are very good performers.
but this boat could be built with any rig, i just dont want the complication and costs of all the shrouds and hardware, and excessive time rigging and de-rigging. Especially when we just want to go fishing for an afternoon.
With unstayed masts, it takes literally seconds to step the masts and get going,
or alternatively, leave the masts in the gallows, with booms, spars and furled sails, and just use the boat in powerboat mode.

luggers have proven to be superior to sloops on all points of sail except( for same sail area) close hauled. ( now i know this will open a can of worms- but this has been well researched and i have spent a lot of time chatting to a lot of N.A's)
a well-trimmed sloop will always be faster on a triangular course, granted. Now, i like to tack and beat to windward as much as the next fella, but with time and channel constraints, sometimes we just fire up the iron genny :)
these mac type boats dont point well as it is, so the superior sloop rig is almost lost on these hulls.
the lower C.O.E. rigs will heel less, with less dynamic gybes, and less tension on the sheets.
cheaper to rig and maintain.
the ketch rig improves performance, and gives an extra string for the kids to pull. but mainly can increase sail area, but still keep the COE low, it also keeps masts short, fitting in with the design brief for the main mast to be no longer than pulpit to aft of pilothouse- in order to keep the cockpit uncluttered.

I take exception to the comment that Mac power sailors don't point well, agreed with the original OEM sails and set up as Roger suggested for the X being 5 degrees mast back rake they don't point, HOWEVER, with good sails and a well tuned rig we point with most the mono hull race boats, well inside the 45 off the wind.

Now agreed they are not the fastest boats up wind and normally come off the wind slightly as thats the fastest while being slightly more indirect, but all boats have their strengths and weaknesses, the Mac is quick on a reach and we have given many of the gung ho racers a nasty scare or a beam reach and anything further back, we do suffer badly when the wind drops out because we are so heavy in comparison to their light weight dog boxes they call boats, I figure we are about 4800lbs on the water while many of them are around 2500lbs.

There are lots of free image hosting services out there--a couple of which are to be avoided at all costs, notably Photobucket and Tinypic (owned by Photobucket). A quick Google search of "Photobucket sucks" will quickly illustrate why loathing Photobucket has practically become an online religion. Their sudden decision to hold their users' photos for ransom and block those photos from appearing on other websites has defaced thousands of fine forums like this one. They make that smirky Pharma-Nozzle Martin Shkreli look like Saint Francis of Assisi (By the way, Smirk Boy's now in Federal PMITA prison for securities fraud, where one can only hope he's the "Belle of the Ball").

For now Lensdump.com will do the trick for you. Registration is quick, free and easy. I normally just lob my photos onto a web domain I have, but for the purposes of illustration, here's one I've just hosted by Lensdump:

Image

Basically, once you've uploaded your pix, created your account, and verified it by an emailed link, just choose a photo from your Lensdump album gallery and look below it for the "Embed codes" link. Click that link and scroll on down to "BBCode". When you move the cursor over the code a little <Copy> button will pop up to the right. Click that button and then just paste that code into your forum editor (either mouse-right-click-->Paste or <Ctrl><V> for Windows machines). Bingo!

By the way, if you need a superb yet simple basic photo viewer and editor (with useful basic functions like crop and resize), then download a free copy of IrfanView.

i absolutely agree Mike, apologies for a very general, sweeping statement,

all boats are a compromise- if the best and the most expensive, my point was that the macs wont point as well as other boats, but then those boats( heavier, bigger keels, less windage etc etc, are not trailerable, and they btoo are a compromise.
I am more than happy with the mac not being the fastest on a triangular course- i know they are fast on a beam reach and running, even deep running.

i have no desire to race- otherwise, i would have bought a different boat.
my point was, that my chosen sailplan was also a compromise in pointability, with the lower aspect rig, but i didnt mind that compromise, as i have already learnt to live with the slightly diminished pointability of this design concept.

Thanks Bilge i will try that, i too lost a lot of time and pics through photo bucket.
i cant talk about it, otherwise i start ranting and foaming at the mouth!

thanks for your help.
will get on that later this evening.

I believe here in the states you can obtain an annual wide load permit. Just decorate the front and back with the necessary flags and banners and your good to go. However, you have to obtain a permit for each state in which you intend to travel. I presume wide load permit and regulations will vary from state to state similar to maximum length overall.
