I learned that back in the 60's when they started making transistor radios.

Wonder how many anchors he lost before he figured out to use the one on the chain? :?

I am happy to say that I have never lost an anchor - ever - I always know right where it is - (in the chain locker).

Nah, it's not a plow anchor - it's the one like everyone else has - you know - those Danforth ones with the flukes?? easy to store. I really want a plow anchor for the stern - the bad thing about the plow ones is they are hard to store but they have no moving parts so that's cool. The flukes are like a whale anchor. (I don't know! why are you asking me? ) I am the "anchor ignorant" person.

I just throw it in the water and wait for the boat to stop drifting.

Can we chip in and buy an hour of anchor management therapy for our friend Boat?

BOAT wrote: You guys would probably make fun of me and I would be so embarrassed to anchor in your presence. I run upwind a little ways, and then I just drop everything I have over the side - chain, rope,, anchor - the whole banana - I just empty the chain locker - then I sit back and wait to see what happens. If the boat stops at some point I figure I'm good and open a beer.
You anchor like 75% of boaters I see. And yes, I laugh at them.

Anchor snobs! :?
Guys like me who only anchor in 3 feet of water with a boat that only weighs 2000 pounds and an anchor that weighs half as much as the boat do not usually get into much trouble on the hook. It's just not something that has ever caused a lot of trouble for me. Maybe I am just lucky.

If I anchored like you guys do in 100 feet of water with 40 knot winds then i would be up all night worrying - but that never happens. You guys would need to teach me how to do that if I ever get to the east.

My main bower is the largest Fortress that fits in the locker, which turns out to be the smallest anchor Fortress makes at 4 lb, on 20 ft of 1/4" chain and 125 ft of 3/8" three-strand line. :D

I have a stern anchor that's really a backup to the main, which is an 11 lb Bruce knockoff on 1/4" chain and 5/16" three-strand. I used it in Cape Cod as a stern anchor to keep the bow into the wakes at the beach, and it's just too heavy and clumsy for that sort of work.

It was surprising how hard I had to pull to get the stern around so the boat was beam to the wind. And current, as the tide was coming in from the port side at the same time.

I've had this super cheap ($20) 5 lb Hooker Quickset HQ10 forever, and never used it. I think I'll put it on some 5/16" three-strand I have with a plastic thimble spliced on, with no chain. Just for stern duty in sand. It should be good enough for that. Got the idea from all the other boats stretching out stern anchors using super cheap loop shank anchors that looked just like it.

And keep the Bruce knockoff for a spare, in a locker where I don't need to mess with it. Ever. :P

Wait - what were we talking about again? :|
