Myself as well as I believe lxneigh have had JO WOODWORKS out of Texas make rudders from white oak... considerably stronger rudders for under 200 bux a piece but of course wood which will need revarnished once a year

However another reason people are breaking rudders is the bracket....once the bracket bends ...all of the lateral forces are on the bolt ..which will not hold up no matter what material it's made from wood/plastic/fiberglass/carbon fiber ....bracket needs to be addressed first or no matter what u put in there it WILL snap if the bracket flares out at the bottom

I glassed mine with west epoxy. Used a bronze bushing and painted with grey epoxy primer. 2 layers of biax on each side of rudder head. Upgrade to half inch bolt. They arent breaking. Long job though.
