A few more questions

Post by macowneril2015 » Thu Jun 27, 2019 11:32 am

Hello all,

I upgraded my entire electrical system and I want to make sure that my shore power inlet is wired correctly, could any one provide what each prong in a 30 Amp inlet is? Also any suggestions on best securing 2 27 series AGM Batteries in the forward booth seat on a :macx:, only complication is on the far starboard side I have a remote shore power outlet but besides that it is relatively open. Also does anyone know the diameter of the bow pulpit railing I am looking to get a holder for a pennant. The final question is for those who have added interior fans, how do you mount them to the interior liner?

The 30A twist-lock inlet is a NEMA L5-30P. The hooked prong is the equipment ground, and the "W" is the neutral. The unmarked is the hot (or phase) conductor.

You can check that at a pedestal or the end of a live cord* with a DMM or VOM by checking the W to ground (zero volts) and unmarked to ground (120V) and unmarked to W (120V).

*just keep it away from water so you don't accidentally drop it in when energized

Thank you, I actually had the ground and neutral flipped so thank you. It is so hard to find a good diagram for it.

And that would not have shown by testing with a DMM or VOM, or even one of those little receptacle testers, so my bad. :P

Oh, and an easy way to remember which is which is that looking at a 30A 120V twist-lock receptacle with the ground (hooked blade) at the bottom, the hot is on the right and the neutral is on the left. Just like the common 5-15 and 5-20 120V straight-blade receptacles that are all over your house and everywhere else.

The inlet, which is a plug, is the opposite of course, when looking at it from the POV of the receptacle.
