MacGregor 19 emergency kicker motor
MacGregor 19 emergency kicker motor
I plan to have another 2-stroke motor besides my 40HP. I found one at 5HP. Would that be enough to move the boat in case of emergency with no sails?
I don't know how to compute the minimum HP requred pe foot of boat lenght, per pound of weigh.
Dry boat should be 1250 lbs, current outboard motor is another 100 lbs, two persons and gear about 400 lbs. So about 1800 lbs total weight.
What do you think from experience?

I use a 6hp on my 222, so I think you'll be fine. There is no need for excessive power as displacement hulls won't plane.

Re: MacGregor 19 emergency kicker motor
I've got a little Mercury-badged Tohatsu 2.5 hp opened up to 3.5 (an easy-peasy mod, requiring only removal of a restrictor plate in the intake manifold), and it pushes my fairly stout little Com-Pac 16 "Foundling" around quite handily. Unless you've got some really stiff currents to contend with, 5 hp should get you around and about just fine...especially as a backup. No problem!

I launch backwards, usually single-handed, inside a basin typically teeming with drunken idiots racing about to and fro on jetskis five or six up with nary a PDF between them, who I sort of doubt passed the required Virginia State Boating Proficiency Exam. Think I'll just putter out on my trusty iron wind and raise sail way out on the river, if it's all the same to you.

I've motored hundreds of miles on my 26d with a 1998 Nissan (Tohatsu) 5hp 4 stroke long shaft.
Easily hits 6 knots and runs for more than 50 miles on 3 gallons of gas.

Re: MacGregor 19 emergency kicker motor
I added a 5 hp Nissan next to my 40 hp Tohatsu on my 18 years ago, mostly for a slower trolling speed while fishing. And just upgraded to a 6 hp merc. The only issue is weight as the merc is mounted on the starboard right behind my 210 lb. a$$. It's a bit of insurance as the 40 is the original

Re: MacGregor 19 emergency kicker motor
We just bought an 8hp outboard to power different boats (we live on the water) and would like to mount it on the M26 as a kicker. Are there any pictures showing how this is done? It seems the twin rudders make it problematic.
