The main was dumped but with the hull so far out of the water we started to get windage on the hull, now going sideways at about 2 knots, managed to get the weight onto the rail & return back onto a horizontal level.
Robbiebull,
I am curious why yours didn't round up before it got that far over.
While sailing a close reach in about 10mph winds we came to an opening between 2 islands. Another keel boat had gone though and we saw them getting knocked over nearly 45deg. I could see the same gust coming hard from wind being funneled though the channel. It knocked us over hard (no heel indicator at the time) but the M rounded up and stood on her feet.

Hmm,
I am hearing about the mast rake, I had an experianced sailer out with me & we had the sheet & main let out, but the wind had gotten onto the hull, so no way back there.
I have a backstay adjuster, what would be the mast rake for a Mac 26X ?

robbie im working on 1 inch of mast rake maybe 2 inches
im planning to play around with the rake,at present i have a single line from the top of the mast to the starboard aft,my next plan is to fit a chain plate to the port and then use a pulley system to adjust the rake to marked presets.
looks like bank hol weekend is stuffed for sailing

bastonjock--when I installed my port backstay I had to cut an inspection plate hole to access the back of the stern quarter. It is impossible to access it from below as there is tons of foam in that location. Frank C has the mod somewhere in the mod section.

Yeah,
I was the same as well, installed a 6 inch inspection hatch from the seat side to access area on Port side to install additional point for Port mounting.
I should get round to adding some stuff into the MODS page.

Backstay tension has nothing to do with mast rake on a properly rigged

Please don't confuse mast rake with mast bow/bend. Rake determines the fore/aft location of the mainsail, which induces either lee helm (mast forward), or weather helm (mast aft). Tensioning the backstay induces mast bend, which regulates mainsail shape.

robbiebull/bastonjock,Rob/Bob, If you look in the Resources tab above, there are manuals for the different years of

's. Just download the manual for your year of

and there is a page that shows how to set your mast rake and bend/bow of the mast and other pertinent info on mast rigging/tension.

The best way to understand the effect of mast rake, is to get out on a sailboard. Mast forward, the board heads away from the wind. Mast aft, the board heads up. It is how you steer the thing. Besides, they're a blast.
