I sail on Lake Tahoe, California Your 26X goes 15 knots? Can I ask what engine and prop you have and if you empty the whole boat to bare bones or what?

Sounds like an outboard problem. I would think you would be at the rev limiter with that prop.
The best I got out on my X so far is 16.5 knots avg @ 5100 rpm. Without ballast, Boat packed for day trip, 2000 50 hp Yamaha 4 stroke, 14x11 solas prop, 3 on board, old bottom paint, with mast in trailer position. I took the mast off and still didn't notice any difference.
I'm still over proped and going to try to tweak it to get to 5500-5600 and I'm removing the old bottom paint so I'm hopeful theres more in her.
The prop that came on my boat didn't have any markings that I could see but the prop guy said it was a 14x9 off a merc outboard. And all I could do was around 9-10 knots (guess) and it just plowed and made a huge wake (ballast in cause i thought riding in a mac without it would be death after reading the internet) So I don't know what my next prop should be cause I can't seem to find many 14x10 props. And I want to go stainless.
I know this doesn't help you much but I know on my first outing on the new boat and it did like yours and just plowed, it was a big downer so I know how you fell.
I didn't get the Mac to be just a sailboat. I got it to be both so I was bummed till I got it sorted out.
Good luck man.

The engine was completely gone over at the merc repair shop. The say its "perfect" but I have noticed black gray colored "smudges" on the water line indicative or an outboard running rich. In fairness to the merc shop the lake it 1000 feet higher than here in town where the shop is. But considering all the boats they work on go to Tahoe you would think they would adjust it accordingly! As its warrantied I dont want to mess with the mixture but maybe I should. I am thinking I will check the position of the 4 mixtures screws and record that info and first see if they are all set to the same opening. Then maybe try a 1/4 turn each and see how it runs. If I dont see any improvement then put it back and forget it.
Does anyone on this forum know how to make the adjustment to the mixture? I know little I do from the old days of working on cars. In theory should be similar.
Is your outboard all fuel injection or does it have carbs?
I learned a lot getting this boat. Any larger boat I have had when I lived close the to ocean I always did "sea trials" to make sure it worked 100%. This boat was 100 miles from the water and I took the guys word for everything. Lots of stuff I had to do that I wasnt expecting and didnt find out until I was trying to sail. Rebuilding the carbs is one of them!

As I wrote previously, I have a 1998 Merc 4 stroke ELPT 4S (non-BF). My current prop is a Turning Point 12 1/2 x 8. Boat isn't loaded - nor is it stripped. No water in the holding tank for example, but fully rigged (with extra sails) and lots of tools, etc. Not really a lot of stuff - a day sailer.

My yamaha is carb. And I meant to add that the reason the "claimed" 14x9 prop only got to around 8-10 knots is because it was on the rev limiter @ around 6100-6300 rpms.

Well thats great, 14 inch diamater prop. back in 2000 ,4 stroke?
Not a Big Foot, so how did you get a 14 inch prop. on your engine?
I am not aware Yamaha had a big foot 50 back in 2000.

It's the t50. High thrust Yamaha with the lower gear ratio. And the 14" just does clear. At least all the info I have found points to that.

I have a 2002 30hp Merc EFI that I removed the air restrictor and put in a reprogrammed ECM. I got 15.3 Mph by myself with empty ballast on a choppy lake Michigan. My outboard weighs 224lbs. Dlanderson, I wonder if your props would fit on my motor? I would like to try a few and possibly buy one from you.

When I read these threads
All I can think is how glad I am that I did not listen to the hype about following the manufactures max hp engine limits.
I knew a 50 would not be enough to move something that big
Not enough for my needs anyways
I only bought the Mac because of its dual purpose nature
Without the big engine, I would not have been satisfied
Truth be told, if someone said they would give me any engine I wanted right now, I would take the Optimax 150!
Slightly bigger size than my 75/90/115 block
Slightly heavier
But I am convinced it would be PERFECT

both the yammy and merc high thrust bigfoots are exact same motor painted different colors.both are built at the same chinese factory, props will interchange, for a decent stainless prop try the stilletto's by i beleive Turning Point 14 x 9.

Ray...why do yammy's get all the good press on e sailing boards over Mercs? Don't tell me brand loyalty influences technical evaluation!!!!
Btw, your Chevy sucks..I heard Osama bin Laden worked a Chevy assembly line once...

Just for comparison, I have a Honda BFP60 with 14x9 prop on my 26M. I get about 16 kts at ~5600 rpm on light chop with ballast full, my 170lbs, 12 gal fuel and a cabin full of boat-type stuff. The 14x11 would only make it to about 13kts at under 5000 rpm.

Maybe something to do with what hp range their evaluating, there is a lot of corporate rebadging that goes on at different horsepower levels and can get confusing. I know all merc's 40hp and below are rebadged tohatsu's as are alot of the small hp evinrudes.the midlevel yamaha and merc share powerheads and gearcase.once you hit 90-100 is where they all tend to stay true to brand with no sharing of engineering or rebadging. Are you sure young Bin Laden was working the line,or was he a corperate intern at GM for the summer, hard to imagine the son of a billionaire slaveing away on the assembly line when he could be out with Dubya partying on the vineyard on weekends away from harvard.
