Well the latest crack boat is destined to be removed later today... Turns out with a battery and a little fresh gas the 5.7 runs very well...outdrive is bad

It's not worth it to me to pull the motor, and cut up the boat. But by offering up a "free running 5.7, but must take whole boat" ad on CL worked very well... I got everything I wanted off it, and my hoarding pile grows....

Meanwhile Christine finished up my pirates chest gas tank cover..

She even added two beer holders 8) 8)

Cheers mates...

Thanks... There is SOOO much more woodwork coming....

I basically gave christine and karen a "free pass" to my hoarding pile as they restore their 23 san juan ...so far they've completely replaced their damage bow pulpit, life lines replaced with nice SS ones, and a new stern rail...

So shes getting busy in the wood shop in exchange...couldn't have asked for both nicer people, and a hella deal for me getting all my wood trim done

this pirate chest covers my 6 gallon gas tank

Crap...I would have taken that boat, pulled the v8, and put my OB on it and had the cool Hudson River cruiser I seek.

I call dibs on the next crack boat. If the hauler just wants the engine I'm interested in the rest if crack boat.

Travelling to make money is costing me the good boat deals....

I've already got my eye on another one....see I find people wanting to "sell trailer, must take boat" and since I conviently have my own personal boat lift I offer to give a deposit, bring the boat here and hoist it off, and bring their trailer back. It's easier to sell a trailer without a "project" boat on it.

I bring them home and strip them out....and I love the surprises I find inside the cabins like, the Flare guns are always fun at parties...

I also have a pretty extensive pile of teak wood piling up, and from what I understand is very expensive and getting harder to acquire

I'll also never run out of Stainless Steel "bits" anytime soon either

Today since it is raining I am going to start sanding the table so it can be restained and cleaned up. Yesterday I pulled all the wooden bulkheads out of the VN23. Christine took them home and is going to re-cut them out of better wood....

cheers

Hi,
I've just acquired a newport 23. the previous owner cut the bow sprit down and used it as a sloop.
Do you by chance know the measurements of the bow pulpit/spirit, or even have one for sale? the shives in all the standing blocks are shot also.
Thanks,
Gregory

Hi

Congrats on your VN23...you need to start a thread, and post pics

i dunno you read this whole thread, but I also sloop rigged mine. However I didn't chop off anything original when I did it. I have two full sets of sails and the original mast, and it could be re-rigged back to OEM standards in about 20 min tops. However I re-rigged it with a different mast and etc. to better suit MY needs, but did so without compromise to OEM Setup.

When you say the sprite you mean that big wooden spar up yonder on the front? :D I still have mine and can take measurements and pics if you'd like

The bow pulpit on mine is not original...and the only one I have left would fit a vn23 has a little bit of "road rash on one part (looks like the original owner hit something and bent it back...however its not bad) If you want I would take pics of it. Dunno where you are but you can have it.

Whats a shive? i have never been to prison, but have heard that is a home-made knife... 8)

cheers man, if I can help I am glad too

Dear autocorrect i'm tired of your shirt!
Yes, that Is what i meant sheave is the part the line rides on. Mine are all cracked and brittle.
As the Bowsprit is cut off i cant put a forestay in the right position until i know where! I am assuming the bobkin would attach where there is now a ring for the trailer winch or they made a pulpit stout enough not to need any bracing underneath.
If you have the sails I'd be wanting them but swapings kind hard me being in Florida! Most of the stuff i have to trade is off of bigger boats and such.
Im of the ketch ODAT that sank in that silly tropical storm arthur. And the Ventures to keep kids busy until refit is finished.

You'd have to send me a pic of the sheave...I am not really a sailor, I am just pretending at this point. I can look and see what I have...I have a lot of stuff

The Vn23's I have seen do have a chain, or stay, between the underside and the boat...I do not use mine, but the "hookups" are there. I plan to put a cannon on my bowsprite eventually.

Send me the measurements and pic requests you need and I'll take them tomorrow...speak simply, if you read my thread you have learned I am NOT a numbers guy :D pics help

I am not giving up the sails....they will go with the boat when I eventually upgrade one day, so that someone can sail her as a true Vn23 should be (I still have the original mast, just don't use it) I have two OEM mainsails and 3 jibs

Cheers

long way to go before i replace the sheaves in those pulleys!
Main thing im trying to find is the measurement of the sails
And most important for now the distance from the mast to the front attachment for stay.
I would be height from where stay attaches from mast to bow and Jwould be length from foot of mast to where forestay attaches to deck Jib
Is would be height from where stay attaches from mast to bow and Jswould be length from foot of mast to where forestay attaches to deck staysail(inside jibe)
From what i see looking around on internet, one jib forestay attaches at end of pulpit(i call a platform a pulpit ,a round timber a spirit the rails you hold on to are just that)
And the staysail(inside jib) attaches right on bow. yours look similar?

Also the sails, not one of the ones came with mine are right :( you by chance got those measurements written down?
Lot to ask i know but you seem to be the go-to guy and i appreciate the heck out of it

Been real busy...mostly taking care of MIL (mother in law) is taking up most of my time....clearing out M's garden to make room for an addition we are having built to move the in-laws up here. (M is Maryanne, the admiral)

I did squeeze a little time to work on the boat stuff.

The Vn23 has all the bulkheads out to be re-cut in nice wood. After Christine cuts the pattern I'll have to put the old ones back in for a bit...seems the "Rolesville Marina" is going to be in the annual Rolesville Christmas parade on Dec 7th 8) We're going to decorate and pull the VN23 in the parade, and have "christmas pirates" on board and throw candy canes.... I'll rig up a stubby mast, have either that dinghy sail, or might just run the jolly roger. My neighbor is on the Chamber of Commerce and suggested it.

I also, after years of unsuccessfully trying to sell these two 29' masts i decided to put them to work....attached them to the boat lift...now I can wash, dry, raise to inspect etc large sails...and the pirate flag is now pretty high up there....
