I hate to do this, but I dont know how to post a new question. I only know how to reply to to a post. Rick, you said that your boat had a TV when you sold it. I would like to buy a small portable 12 volt or battery TV for my boat. 6,7,8, inch screen. No dvd player, no radio, no nothing. Just a little TV. Can aynone help me? Now, to make this legal. this TV was (is) a small portable color set - - - it sits up on the dinette table - - - it will now either have to be hooked up to cable or have a digital converter box - - - In Marina Del Rey it got LOTS of local channels without a good antennae or cable hookup - - - and I think it originally cost me $79 at Best Buy + a small junk antennae.

PS On edit - - whoops - - - I just noticed you said 12V - - - mine was NOT 12V, nor is my friend's that is mounted across the mirror - - - they have to be plugged in when in the slip and hooked up to shorepower- - - sorry. I did have a Sony Watchman battery powered TV that worked on the boat, and I occasionally watched a ballgame on it while sailing - - - but I'm not sure that they work anymore after the recent digital changes.

Thanks Rick. I had one of those, a black and white. But with digital, its a whole new ballgame. A converter needs an inverter, too much messin around. I think they have them in the backseat of some minivans for the kids to watch. So they must be around somewhere.

It's no longer sold new, but you see them on eBay from time to time. It's great unit, and can be powered by 12V or 110v. The really great thing is it comes with infrared headphones so the Admiral and I can watch a movie while the other folks sleep.

How about a USB TV Tuner which you use with a laptop computer?

Hey Québec 1 I suspect that the used item on Ebay isn't HD ready, that is probably why it is for sale, and for only $30. I too have a few non HD TVs of various sizes and they are useless without an AC HD converter. That item is a DVD player though, I have a unit very much like it that I use onboard a lot.

don't forget - you now need to have a digital tuner to receive off-air channels. there may be quite a few tvs sold for cheap in the near future.

Some of the LCD tv's only draw in the 50W range.
My 20" LCD tv with built in DVD player draws 55 watts, powered rabbit ears draws 3 watts, DTV converter box draws 8 watts.
66 watts total for off-air digital tv or a dvd movie.
Small plug-in inverters in the 100 watt range completes the job and makes your 12vdc search much easier.

Okay, this is just us, but we go up to the boat to get away from the world (and land). The thought of TV doesn't appeal to us. We would rather watch the stars and sunset. I know for many, their boats are summer beach houses and I guess TV works for them.

Precisely, Rich. I confess I can use the computer screen and work from the office boat during the week sometimes, though.

Well, for us we also enjoy 'getting away' from it all, but at the same time we might want to enjoy a nice movie, just the two of us, with a couple of glasses of wine, before we turn in for the evening... and that's where the DVD/TV is really nice. And as I say, with the IR headphones we can do so without disturbing anyone else on board, too.
