Labor Day Sucia Experiences.......what were they??

Post by waternwaves »

OK, Where are they,

Some of us barely got to be on a boat this weekend, (oh well, if you call pulling crabpots onto a kayak in 25 KT winds with chop and swell boating sure....) (Or changing out alternators at the dock.....) but schedule wise our weekend plans left out us out of sailing.

Now I know you guys that met a Sucia had all the wind you could possibly want.....

Where are the pics, the videos, the stories.

Signed......

Chinook's far from her Puget Sound home waters, down east in the Chesapeake Bay - and Uncle Jim, Sea Dreamer and I met up with them on the Rhode River Sunday. We rafted up for a while in Half Moon Bay, across from Cadle Creek, while a good-sized thunderboomer passed us to the north; but the southeast wind favored anchoring further up, south of Camp Letts, for the evening and the night. (We anchored separately, and Mike and I used our dinghies to ferry Jim & Clarissa over to Chinook. Their Porta-Bote, "Small Fry," is definitely cooler than my inflatable.)

Mike and Sandy were delightful hosts, and we had supper (pot-luck) and a long late visit under the full-enclosure canopy of Chinook. I was very favorably impressed with their modifications and additions, especially the full enclosure for the cockpit, the refrigerator (!) and the beautifully-finished galley front with all the drawers and its great organization. They were suitably impressed with my caipirinhas - and suitably cautious. (Mike had one and Sandy had a couple of sips of his.)

The stories of their very-serious travels in Chinook are a revelation as to how incredibly capable our Macs can be! And their mods are an inspiration to me, since I want to travel in Bossa Nova. (Probably they'll add up to a very expensive inspiration, but Bossa Nova will be so very much the better for every detail I can manage to copy!)

We parted ways early Monday morning. I had to skedaddle earliest, because I was expected elsewhere in the afternoon; Jim & Clarissa came in later, and said that Chinook was heading up to Baltimore. (I hope they had a good trip and found a good anchorage. The weather forecasts aren't pretty for the next few days here.)

Sorry but you'll have to wait for Mike's photos.

We were planning to go, but the weather was lousy. Raining most of the time and occasional big gusts. We don't have much experience yet and after reading the weather/wind reports and seeing that the trip was canceled on the MYCBC site, we decided not to go out. Hopefully those that braved the weather had fun!

I don't think anyone braved the weather! :D
I was one of the planners for the event, I posted all the trip data on MYCBC for those who were planning to go. I monitored three different weather sites all week trying to get a feel for how the weather would play out. I held out until Friday afternoon before conceding to defeat then reluctantly posted that I would not be going and did not expect anyone else to after which the club Commodore posted a cancellation notice. The winds were blowing from the SE directly into Fossil Bay and Echo bay, there would have been no protection in the larger bays and limited protection in the little cove on the north side of the island It rained all weekend and marine forecasts were for Gale Warning and and then Strong Wind Warning, conditions that would simply defeat the purpose of the trip. I was out on the streets and in an open field during some of the gusts and was glad I was not out on the water, it had to be hitting 30kts while I watched those trees bending over, we would have suffered some damage being out in that blow on the water. (of course a big heavy blue water boat would have been in its' element) I am sure Saturday night would have been sleepless in Fossil bay trying to keep the anchors from dragging, it would not have been enjoyable. Canceling the trip was a good call, but it was the first time in over 7 years that it ever got cancelled, maybe longer but I had only been in the club that long. There will be next year with more trips to plan and perhaps favourable weather, for now I am accepting the onslaught of winter. Looking forward to meeting new members as they join with their new boats, the club is lots of fun. 8)

hmmmmmmmmmmm

oh well............

i guess it would have been pretty uncomfortable anchored in most of echo bay. Good reason to sail all day and only anchor at night when you are really tired....... :D

I also am thankful how lucky I was to get my admiral to go kayaking on two of those days in saratoga passage during that blow........I have to admit.......it did draw a lot of stairs from passing boats......

Now we will just wait for a little more of our reliable september wind.

We were going to go out, but when we saw the PITCH boat fleet recalled because of high winds (many of which returned to port with broken rigging) we decided to just stay home. Monday would have been a nice day to go out, but by then I was getting my classroom ready for the start of school.

This would have been a much better weekend for the Sucia trip. We just got home from a day out in the islands, absolutely gorgeous! We found a quiet beach on Matia to pull into the beach on the high tide and have lunch and enjoy the sun. We didn't pull into Sucia, but it looked as if those bays were full. What a lovely day on the water.
