Morning All,
One of many items to do this winter on my new is lettering for the boat name and home port. I've seen at marinas, boats carrying the name of the owners "hometown" in lieu of the "home port." Is one generally considered "proper" over the other? I don't want to be the guy underway with his fenders hanging. What do you do?

Unless you are a documented CG vessel you are pretty much free to put whatever info you want where you want it. I carry my hometown on the boat, even though its not even on the water, because it is so nautical

We don't have a home "port" on our boat but if we did, I would put our home town. Our home town has a small pond worthy of inner tubes not Macs. I think people like to know where you live, not where your boat is located.

You aren't required to even put a name on your boat unless it's documented with the Coast Guard.

When were out sailing on Pudget sound I see boats with home towns in the mt's of Idaho where I know there is only a little trout lake. We have not put our home town on the aft of our M but it will happen this next year. We live and moor near ( 3 blocks ) from the Columbia river that we could eventually sail to the Pacific ocean on, but our location is known as a desert and that throws folks.

The nsme of my boat was:

THE NUTS

Underneath it I put:

CHERNOBYL, RUSSIA

That started a lot of great conversations and I met a bunch of people around the Marina that way.

I was to shaken up when I learned after a long night makeing friends with a 12 pack and nameing it Hot Tub to consider putting it on the Boat, but after you posted "The Nuts" some how I don't feel so bad and will put Hot Tub on Port and Starboard with Hail of Port at Stern.

1. I am lazy
2. usually solo sail
3. always forget about them
4. did I mention I am lazy?

Hey, I can identify with that!
Maybe ya look into automatic inflating fenders

Leaving your fenders out is considered tacky , akin to leaving a commode at a party with 3 metres of toilet paper attached to your shoe

if this doesn't bother you all the power to you, go on a fender bender tender

one local exception in our area is on the Erie canal. Locks can be as little as 10 minutes apart so people generally leave their fenders out

Add all the time I saw you out their I thought you wanted to do Bumper bounce. Most boats I see with fenders out I steer clear of and maybe thats your secret to aviod collision.

The previous owners of my MAC named her "PARADOX", never meeting them I tried to figure out how they came up with this name. Then I recalled the broker at the marina mentioning to me that the previous owners are both Doctors. VOILA !! "Paradox"
