Havasu Pocket Cruisers Convention 2011

Post by Madelon »

This will be another exciting event, indeed. A good day-by-day summary of the 2010 Havasu Pocket Cruiser's Convention with exciting pictures of participating boats was posted in the Small Crafts Advisory Blog: http://smallcraftadvisor.com/our-blog/tags/events/ (note the gallant Mac 26 on the first picture as you scroll down!). Looking at the web page of the event, several MacGregor boats are already on the list of participants (http://www.sailhavasu.com/); hope to see more still. Folks are trailering down all the way from Canada, Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Louisiana, Wyoming, Utah, Texas, California, Nevada, Arizona, ...You name it...trailer sailors or what? Perhaps reading between the lines but is this event intended as a commerical boost for the local hotels. Is there going to on-water free moorage, tieups or beaching available?

I went last year, and I enjoyed myself very much. Sean Mulligan is the unofficial host . He is a local, who enjoys sailing. and
this all started as a bunch of his friend getting together. Yes this is an event to help the local economy. But this is so much more. The seminars are very interesting and helpful. But what I enjoyed most, was the fellowship of all the different sailors . I was waiting for the Mac X wasn't a real sailboat comment. That never happened. One of the events was a on the water sailboat show with the public invited. There were a variety of boats there and their owners that just wanted to be on the water . Last year the temps were 75 to 80 and for the most part we had good wind. I cant go this year (*&%&%*&$$$*%^&) but I will go again in 2012. For more info go to http://www.sailhavasu.com . The first sailboat in the video is my boat (Knot on Duty) under a rare snow here in Eugene Ore. As you can tell I am very up on this event and I encourage everyone that can go, to go. Last year we got to use the slips that the hotel had, but there were only 68 boats there last year, this year there are over a hundred and counting. Sean has worked his butt off and got other resorts and the local marina's on board so there will be accomadations for you. Steve C

Many that have attended in the past give good reviews but now the event is getting large (107) last I looked, I'm still seeking an answer to free moorage with access to the on-shore events?

I'm hearing Kelly-Hansen is sponsoring a fun race for Macgregors, anybody know the details of this?

Newell,

You can find the answer to a lot of questions you may have on the HPCC website.

Yes, this event IS designed to bring income into my town, it is also designed to give the trailer sailor industry vendors, suppliers anf manufacturers direct access to thier niche market....and mostly..it is designed to give the trailer sailors themselves a first class event based around the type of boats they sail and sailing they do. Supporting the community and the industry is what makes this event possible, as the community and industry then support this event and make it financially possible. Without that support, an event of this magnitude just could not happen unless we charged huge entry fees, which we do not. It costs you NOTHING to attend. The only events that will have a fee are the Dixie Belle paddle Wheeler Cruise and the Banquet on Sunday night before the awards ceremony (You do not have to attend the banquet in order to attend the awards ceremony) SO, you can effectively attend virtually the ENTIRE event if you want and pay ....$0......How's that for a commercial event!! There are no hidden agendas here. The costs associated with renting on the water facilities for an event spanning 7 days are ...well ......staggering. Howeve,r because of the way we have structured the event ...it's do-able. Everyone wins with this system.

I would invite you to check out the list of seminars and events we have planned all based around SMALL BOAT SAILORS. Yes you can go to a big boat show.....but it is about just that...big boats. Us small guys get pushed back in the corner. Not here. Small guys are the stars at this event!

Please feel free to drop me any questions you may have about the event to [email protected] What I would really like would be for you to attend and join oir family! You won't find a finer group anywhere!

"Free moorage". Lake Havasu is a good sized lake. If you want to find a secluded cove and drop the hook each night that's perfectly fine. There are many BLM "boat in" campgrounds as well that you can use for a nominal fee. We have made arrangements for the Lake Havasu Marina to have slips available to participants at 50% of thier normal rate if you would like a slip. Participants can get slips for $14/night and you may stay on your boat if you wish. The marina is not really set up for live aboards. There are two restrooms that are unheated but clean. There are no shower facilities available there. There are only 15 amp power outlets at a few locations on each dock. You can use them but you'll have to share with others.

Let me know if there are other questions I can answer for you. Love to see you here.

sounds invitiing, Just be aware that the lake, just like lake mead, is home to quagga mussels,
see http://havasufishing.com/index.php?opti ... 7&Itemid=9

and that water ballast boats from all over would be a great way to spread them around,

not a reason not to go, but a reason to be especially careful to follow all the guidelines, dry the water ballast etc.
some have alleged that is it kind of hard to completely dry our water ballast tanks, though the desert air might help

Agree is a problem, but manageable. See http://www.macgregorsailors.com/forum/v ... =4&t=13629.

As my comments state, I add several water softener pellets of KCl (Potassium Chloride) through the air outlet on my :macx: prior to flooding the ballast with Lake Mead water. My reviews of the possible solutions shows this to be more effective and environmental safer than using vinegar, and avoids most especially the use of bleach.

Since I am a cautious type when jumping into anything I see hyped and advertised, I was doubtful the Pocket Cruiser's Convention would be as organized, large and fun as advertised. I wanted to report that it was all that I envisioned and much more. Bringing so many trailerable boats together is a hoot. Thanks to Sean for a mighty effort.

I also want to thank Art Kelley for his support of Macgregor owners.

I had a great time and will go again if possible.

Thank you, Sean Mulligan, for all your efforts to make this week just great.

My wife and I did not participate in all the races but we truly enjoyed sailing on the lake with so many other sailboats. We spent two days cruising around on the north part of the lake and enjoyed having fair winds and relatively small waves compared to those in our home port.

We commend you for organizing such a variety of interesting and informative seminars - both in the morning and in the evening. All the presenters we saw were indeed very well prepared and provided us with valuable information which will help us make decisions regarding sailing and safety.

W were surprised that so many different vendors would come and stay for a whole week; so that we would have time to look at their merchandise and spend time discussing the products with them.

Hey Guys!

So glad you all enjoyed this year's event.

Newell, great job on winning the Mac race and also a great job goes a out to Albert Fishcer for grabbing the second place trophy.

IN other ways WE ALL were winners by being able to renew old friendships and make great new ones too. I am thrilled to death that we are getting the Mac crowd involved with our event. We truly want this event to be for ALL trailersailors and as we all know, the MAC crowd is a HUGE part of the trailer sailing community. Thank you so much for your participation. It is not lost on me the amount of $$ or vacation time that must be expended to attend this event. I am truly honored when I see folks doing that. Jo and I understand the commitment it takes as we also travel to other sailing events with our boat, Dauntless.

I am honestly JUST NOW, getting all the loose ends tied up from the event and getting back to normal. lol SO I apollogize that this message wasn't posted sooner. I did, though, want to make sure to let you guys know how much we enjoyed your company and how much we hope that you'll come back in even bigger numbers next year. Your participation is what makes this event what it has become.

There is a "recap" page now on linked to the main event web page at http://www.sailhavasu.com The "recap" page has links to all the videos, photos (around 2000 and growing!) and articles that have been published on the web. If you have something re: the event you would like linked to the recap page just send me an email at [email protected]

OK, so that's it! Thanks again guys. It was great seeing you all and we hope to see you again in 2012 when we'll do it again!!!

Sean, 'Jo, and yes....Bosun!
