Furling Mains'l and photos

Post by boaterjen »

HI guys. I appreciate that some have asked for photos of the furling mains'l, and I'd be glad to oblige, but I don't know how to do that.

Someone please tell me? I hope it's easy.

Also, I have another problem that relates to the furling mains'l. I installed my bimini cover today, and though I haven't used it yet, I don't really see how it'll work with the furler. The furler works*, but I'm thinking it sticks aft a little farther than the regular boom, and I'm thinking the bimini will not be able to set level while the mains'l boom is up. I think (1) the front edge of the bimi wil hit the sail, and (2) the boom will hit the bimini struts when swinging side-to-side. Anyone have experience with this?

AND ON THE MAINS'L

It works. It's relatively easy. One has to go to the mast at the beginning of use and hand-feed the head/luff into the groove on the mast. Then hoist, sail. If out camping on boat for a week, reef down only to that point. Don't reef quite all the way, so the head will stay fed n the mast. When done with sailing that trip, reef all the way, and your leech sun shield will spiral to cover it.

QUESTION, though,

This is a brand new boat, my first time trying to work all this. But in hoisting the mains'l, I found the reefing line to the mains'l kept getting caught in a jam cleat, preventing hoisting. Going down, no problem, as the reefing line fed right through the jam cleat. My QUESTION is, though, if anyone thinks that particular jam cleat is on backward, as I'd think it would be more useful to function to keep the sail up, not down. (Maybe I am a wanna-be blonde?)

If I learn how to post photos, I'll provide some.

Pictures must be placed on a public server such as PhotoBucket. The instructions that follow are for photobucket, but other image hosting sites will be similar and this is not an endorsment of photobucket.

Go to your photobucket account.
Hover your mouse pointer over the picture that you want.
Several options will appear.
Go down to the IMG code and left click in the code box to the right.
Right click in the code box and select copy.

Now, while composing your post on this forum, right click at the place that you want the pic to appear and select paste. It will look like this:

Code: Select all

Here is a picture that I took in the San Juan Islands:

Cool, huh?
It will appear on the forum like this:

The forum software will automatically re-size the pic for easy viewing and when a member left clicks on it, the original size will be viewable. The board does not actually download, or store the pic, it just uses the code to make your browser do the work. Repeat for up to three pics/post. It is best to use the "Preview" option, to make sure that everything is OK, before you submit the post. There is a three picture limit/post, to help protect those that still have slow internet (me when out & about).

Flickr is a little more difficult.
 ! Moderator Note:
Flicikr may have changed, so I recommend PhotoBucket.
  • Left click on the pic that you want to post.
Above the pic, left click on "All Sizes".
Left click on the size that you want to post. Large works best.
    Right click on the pic.
Left click on "Properties". A window will open.
Beside Address (URL), is the url that you will post. Copy all lines of it.
I triple click on it and it highlights all of it.
Above the edit window for your post, you will find a row of buttons.
Click on the Img button and it will place [Img] tags at the point of your cursor.
Copy and paste your Flikr URL between the [Img] tags in your post.
Enjoy,

~Rich

I have a 2010 Blue hull with the furling main and the bimini. I found the same problem with the boom hitting the bimini. Mike Inman said it should work fine but he’s wrong. I don’t sail or motor fast in the ocean with the bimini up because it’s too low and cuts off too much vision and freedom of movement needed for any unforeseen incident so we use it for shade in the harbor.

I frequently sail single handed out of the Oseanside CA harbor and find the furling systems easy to use. I place the hatch about 1 foot open and both the reefing line and main halyard down below. The trick to raising, is pop the reefing line out the jam cleat and without stopping pull the main up with the halyard, if you pause sometimes the reefing line gets caught in the jam cleat. Lowering sometimes the whole the main sail wants to fall all at once and you have to have a little tension on the main halyard to control the fall, also the main wants to bunch up forward at the mast so while all this is going on you have to pull the main back on the boom furler to keep it away from the mast. Its another “Mac-dance”

Both the main halyard and reefing line have jam cleats, when raising or lowering , keep both lines free and a steady smooth control should work fine…..20 sec or so to raise or lower.

I hope this helps

I don't have furling main on my Mac ( I do on my big boat...very nice) but my boom will not go over my bimini. But my bimini is pretty easy to disconnect at the front end. So if I want to tack or gybe I simply reach up and disconnect and pull the bimini back for a moment...tack/gybe...then pull the bimini back forward and reconnect.

It connects at the front with straps on both side using snap hooks. I normally only hook up one side.

I am happy with this set-up. My bimini is fairly high and I can stand up under it. My head will touch the canvas but I can stand up which is nice. Definitely a situation I am ok with.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Jim

Thanks 4 D Bimini and mains'l info. I am disappointed that I can't sail w Bimini up as is, but I am one who is willing to mod. I will take another look at it and weigh: maybe b ok as is only in harbor, but maybe ok for sailing if I have the canvas shortened so it can't reach as far forward. Will analyze. Maybe whole thing can b moved aft somehow

This is first disappointment in boat. Was looking forward to shade while sailing, per Mike. And I may yet figure it out.

I think I do not want to go through all that to post photos. Will post descriptions instead. And though I used to b a great fan of Apple, and have an iPad also, I see many privacy issues with cloud. You can opt out of using it, but it still operates on u anyway.... So my IOSs are pre-cloud, and if they break in future, I will seek non-cloud replacements. Not into internet sharing media systems save specific choices made.

I see boom operation. Will adapt. It's fine.

Love the evinrude etec 60.

You can upload to PhotoBucket only those photos that you wish to share. It does not have to be automatic. Very secure.

I spoke with Mike today about bimini with furling mains'l problems, and he said it can be done. He shared with me how, and I'll give it a try, report.

I use http://www.tinypic.com. No signup, no account, just upload a photo and get the url for the hosted pic in seconds with no commitment, uploaded from your anonymous computer if there is such a thing. You can even select a smaller size before hitting the upload button, so you don't put a giant photo online, though I think this site automatically scales it down to some max size if it is too big. A very nice feature of this web site, by the way. That and the small preview pane that shows up in your post, so slow computers don't have to load big pics every time they open a thread with pics.

Just copy the second of the four available formats after uploading and paste it directly into your post - it already contains the ubb code for photos (img and /img).
