Honda Outboard Idle Adjustment

Postby Captain Jim » Mon May 12, 2008 7:57 am

I need a little help: I have a 50hp Honda 2005 ob on my :macm: . I need to set the idle speed up to about 900rpm; it is now set at 400 - 500 rpm. Does anyone on the board have a cut sheet showing where to make the adjustment or a reference source that I could go to on the internet?
Thanks for your help in advance..

By the way we put the BOLD VENTURE in at Lake George, N.Y. over the weekend.

Fair winds,
Jim

I don't know about the '05 but on my '02 there are three carb bowls on the SB side of the engine. At each one there is an adjustment screw, ignore the top two and adjust just the bottom. This will adjust the linkage between the three units.

I believe the adjustment screw is #47, a small turn should take care of it.

I just finished rebuilding the carbs on mine and the idle was up to 1500 !

Do not go buy a factory tachometer it is way off. You need to use a a digitial multimeter or auto meter from a auto store for accurate RPM readings. My tach was saying I am on 1500 when I am only at 900 rpms.

Uncle Jim,

Thank-you for the information on setting the idle rpm on our 50hp motor. The adjustment of the idle worked perfectly and the schematic you linked to also is good for the 2005 Honda Outboard for the idle adjustment.

This is another example on how the members of this board share information and help one another. This is a great organization and resource to sailing. Thanks to the founders, maintainers and members.

Fair winds,

Jim
