You're probably right but I'm still a little nervous on the boat without ballast. It just doesn't feel right.raycarlson wrote:why waste all that new expensive horsepower pushing a full ballast tank, ballast is for sailing, you don't need it to motor unless your in heavy heavy seas.

26M + Honda BFP60 Performance
I raised the mast yesterday for the first time since Hurricane Isaac. I figured I'd do some testing with my new 14x9 prop and report the results. Ballast tank full. Boat was loaded with my 170lbs, maybe 300lbs of gear, and 6 gal of fuel. Wind was out of the north at 10mph. Light chop. First run was ...

Re: Bilge is always wet
I too collected some water when on the trailer during Isaac last week. Turns out the overhang on my house was directly over the stbd edge of the hatch and with 16 inches of rain....

My engine is connected to the NMEA bus so I'll report that with my test run I make this weekend.RobertB wrote:What kind of mileage does a fuel ejection motor get? Sounds like it has an afterburnerDaveB wrote:...fuel ejection Bigfoot Honda.![]()

Re: Transducer advice
I have a 441s with in-hull (not thru-hull) transducer. It has a really nice mounting setup that you fill with propylene glycol once affixed to to the hull. I've not yet attached it as I've been testing it in different spots. So far, the best place I've found is just aft of the batteries under the af...

Re: BF50 max speed 9MPH no matter what
Can't imagine it would matter much but that's with mast down. I'd put money on the accuracy of my Garmin. I'll bet I'm just not as loaded as I think I am. I'll do a test run with pics.

Re: BF50 max speed 9MPH no matter what
Just for comparison, I have a Honda BFP60 with 14x9 prop on my 26M. I get about 16 kts at ~5600 rpm on light chop with ballast full, my 170lbs, 12 gal fuel and a cabin full of boat-type stuff. The 14x11 would only make it to about 13kts at under 5000 rpm.

I personally don't trust new to old bonding with polyester resin. When it cures, it shrinks creating internal stresses.

Re: Marina Maneuvers
I always maneuver around dock with the boards down. Since when they're up they stick out quite a bit they're somewhat more susceptible to damage from impact with piers etc. Also, when I changed the prop on my Honda from a 14x11 to a 14x9 prop walk has all but vanished. I can back right into the slip...

Re: Cooler or Fooler??
It takes 144 btu to melt one lb of ice into water. From that, we can calculate that 5000 btu (small air conditioner equivalent) would be almost 35 lb of ice. And that's just for one hour!

Re: Lightning Protection
Have I understood well that the mast is linked to the mast step/ base? Do you consider that the 1/2 bold securing the mast to the base is not sufficient? Compared to aluminum, stainless is not a great conductor. In a strike, the less conductive a material, the more heat that will be generated. I ha...

Re: Lightning Protection
I'll be sailing salt water. The bolts go through the hull. The entire plate is sealed with 5200, holes and all. The bolts are silicon bronze. I will be bonding through a silicon bronze stud through the mast step. The mast will have a flexible copper connection to that stud to facilitate rotation. Th...

Lightning Protection
Here's the first part of my lightning protection system. So far, it consists of one square foot of copper below the waterline with 3/8" bolts. Next step is to bond the mast through to the plates using 4 AWG wire. Any thoughts on my progress? http://myweb.cableone.net/ctstinnette/LightningProtec...
