Re: Mounting GPS on pedestal - cable management
Thanks Jim! Helpful to see the pictures. The cutting board is a good idea. No issues with water traveling down the cable into the pedestal during a rain? Do you detach your Garmin when leaving the boat?

Mounting GPS on pedestal - cable management
I just got a chartplotter and plan to mount on the pedestal, but am wondering what to do with the cables. The cables on my GPS come out the back of the unit, with no way to run them through the swivel mount, leaving them exposed. I have seen some references to navpods, but starting at $250 -- ouch! ...

Re: Labor Day Sucia Experiences.......what were they??
We were planning to go, but the weather was lousy. Raining most of the time and occasional big gusts. We don't have much experience yet and after reading the weather/wind reports and seeing that the trip was canceled on the MYCBC site, we decided not to go out. Hopefully those that braved the weathe...

Re: New to the Forum
Welcome! I'm another new Mac owner and have found this site to be a great learning resource, lots of good tips and great people -- see my post about my first trip, lots of helpful info from other members about how to set it up. It's good to hear that you've found the sailing performance to be better...

Re: First Trip, questions for the veterans
This is planning genius, courtesy of Duane's fantastic site. This should be stickied on the forum for all new owners. Perhaps a newbie section with 'storage' and 'maintenance' sub-sections would be a good addition to this site, which is already an amazing resource for Mac owners... http://home.comca...

Re: First Trip, questions for the veterans
Wow, you folks on this site are great! Thanks for all the helpful info -- I'm taking notes and planning my next shopping trip.
My
friend told me what BOAT stands for -- $ Bring Out Another Thousand $. Pretty funny, but true. Good thing the Mac is such a bargain to begin with

First Trip, questions for the veterans
Note: very lengthy post, please skip to the questions in blue below if you don't have time for some reading :) The admiral and I took out our new (2006) :macm: for a weekend excursion. We just got her a little over a week ago and after a couple of successful launches and motoring around our bay, we ...

Re: FYI: Low cost GPS solution
Upgraded to the 3GS yesterday, and Voila - the GPS nails me right on target. So (just as Duane reports above) the upshot is this solution works for 3G and later phones, but not first generation Iphone Very nice ;) My plan doesn't allow me to upgrade until November...but I might hold out until the n...

Re: New web-based planning/charting tool
Thanks for sharing, looks like a useful tool. Do you have a technique for printing the images for the region you're looking for other than using your browser's print function? I would probably try to maximize the viewable area as much as possible in the browser (remove browser toolbars, status bar, ...

Re: FYI: Low cost GPS solution
I was just going to pick up a little USB/GPS puck for the iBook, but if I had one for the iPod Touch, do you think the iPod would transmit that (GPS) data over wifi to the laptop? Shane, I highly doubt that you would ever be able to stream GPS data from an ipod touch connected to a dongle to your l...

Re: FYI: Low cost GPS solution
What about service? We plan to get up to the Apostle Islands soon. I have been told some people rely on their cell phones rather that VHF, also that service gets poorer the further you are from Bayfield, which is the reason for having it in the first place. As Duane mentioned earlier, you don't nee...
