Surprisingly this thread is still active. As Kaz mention - reference point is very important, but he made wrong conclusions. I wrote before that it would be convenient to mark water as a reference with floating buoy for both boats. This buoy will not be affected by wind and will float with water, th...

Let just add small mod to the process. Let each guy drop floating buoy at their start. The buoy wont be affected by the wind and will mark the progress of that guy relative to the water only. What we will see? Guy with 5 kt wind and 5 kt water current will be floating at his buoy (he has no wind at ...

I need some way to glue wood to the hull, but glue should have some flex. Nut on the centerboard holder (inside the hull) is...

Little introduction. I bought my '99 26X this July (with a slip in Liberty Landing marina - right acroos the lower Manhattan - great view but sailing conditions not for Mac). Boat was in good conditions (given the price I paid). Brought it home last week (Rockaway, NJ) for all sorts of mods, upgrade...

Catigate All that you need is your two statemens: Boat one has an apparent wind of 5 mph on the bow. Boat two has apparent wind of 0. This means that boat two can do nothing (it will in reality float with water speed). Boat one can use apparent headwind for progress forward by tacking. He WILL make ...

Actually, the guy sailing in calm is the only one who can do something. Try to think relative to the water (imagine no river banks) - the one sailing downwind (5 kt) with 5 kt current will be actually in a complete calm conditions - so he has no ability to control his progress. The one who is sailin...

In principle BB is right, unless the guy sailing in calm will do tacking. He will have apparent head wind which he will be using for his advantage being close hauled. He may win the race. Am I correct?

Was there last Year (August 2004). We stay on Lovesick lake for 5 days (just drove there with small dingy on the roof) - appears to be a smart move - lock masters were on stike for a month (imagine how many get stuck on their vacations - there are 45 locks total). Beautiful place, but passing locks ...
