Photo hunt: Got a Rocna anchor on your MacGregor?

Hi all - We’re currently working on a major extension to our website, which includes a comprehensive collection of info / articles / data on anchors, accessories, and anchoring. There is both generic information, and more specific material which applies just to the Rocna. It will go public a little ...

There is independent testing and feedback to help you in your search. You don't need to worry too much about your specific bottom types, as modern anchors are intended to work just about anywhere. The Bulwagga was designed originally to solve the problems of older anchors in grass and weed, but it a...

How small is the locker? Try the dimensions of a Spade or Rocna - the Spade's demountable shank may help, although it would be a pain to do it every time.

An article on polyester vs nylon by Steve Dashew: http://www.setsail.com/_storefiles/71.pdf In a more general response to the OP, I'll also sneak in a link to my own article on rode make-up from the perspective of anchor performance: http://www.rocna.com/boat-anchors/catenary.php -------------------...

CraigSmith: Please cite your sources to say I am wrong. Possibly anchoring techniques have evolved and I am not aware of something but I am quoting what I and generations before me learned at Merchant Navy Academy. I did the calcs when I was a kid and know the results show anchor chain is good for ...

Quite right. The scenario that would damage your board is rough waves, steep swell with breakers - the right combination of boat pitch, wave, and wind, and the boat can fall sideways and trip over its board. There's a reason ocean-going boats in the old days didn't use fin keels - they couldn't make...

Works just fine, until you get into the conditions where it doesn't.

If you need to be regularly reducing foresail area, get a storm-jib.

Short is definitely better, and it's an idea to try to clip the line inboard if possible, so you can move around the deck but not over the edges. Deep sea the reality is you don't clip on 100% of the time, only when you're at the mast or on the foredeck doing what you need to do. The trip from the c...

Maybe 7mm would be better for a 26, depending a little on the anchor.

Eric you are wrong about a few things you say a few posts back concerning chain. It is very important, particularly on smaller boats (e.g. MacGregors) to have good shock absorption, and that means nylon or rubber snubbers. In rough weather any amount of chain will quickly be pulled bar tight - in sh...

And when I picked it up, all the guys at West were gawking at this funny looking new anchor and flipping through Sail magazine. LOL By the way, this thing is a lot bigger looking in person than I thought! :!: The SAIL testing (PDF download, 1.5 MB) can be read here . The relative position of the Ma...

Isn't that the French anchor which I cannot recall the name? It's not the Sword. Begins with a Q. Quest, Quam, help me Perhaps a Q without a tail? It is not a new anchor at all. It used to be called the "Oceane", and was renamed - twice in fact - and is now the "Sword". The desi...

Re: Anchor setting question

Ive read in many places that you set an anchor at 5:1 scope, then set your final scope according to conditions of weather and neighbors etc. Why would you set an anchor at reduced scope, then lengthen? Seems to me you would get more settting force at longer scope, then shorten per conditions or eve...

Craig Smith, Nice to see your info contribution, and welcome aboard. I have watched your video a couple of times, most recently from Blanton's link, and found it very convincing. If I didn't already have a Bulwagga 17, I'd sign up with Rocna. My Bull serves well and fits on my Bruce bow roller ... ...

Re: Type and Size of Anchor

My family has always done daysailing or overnighting in a marina in our prior boat. This year, we are planning to do some true cruising. What type and weight of anchors have readers had good luck with? I'm used to Danforths, but would a plow on a roller work better? Hi all. Sorry for dragging up an...
