Re: Safely Removing a Swing Keel

I bought my PO15 on Amazon and I did use the three steps. But before using the three steps I used paint remover to strip off the old paint. I did not have huge rust issues, but I did take a metal grinder to it until it was smooth. At this point I followed the three POR15 steps. So far it has held up...

Re: Safely Removing a Swing Keel

I did lots of prep before applying POR15. I used paint remover first to remove all the old paint the used a grinder to flare it. Then used the three POR15 steps to to apply my paint. Flaring was done to ensure my keel is smooth

Re: Safely Removing a Swing Keel

Thanks. It’s a 1984 Macgregor. Again did it so that other sailors can do this safely. It’s a lot of weight to be hurt with boat and keel weight. Besides Macs it applies to all sailboats with swing keels

Safely Removing a Swing Keel

Like many of us, I hate to pay others, for things I can do. But to remove the keel from my Macgregor 21 was not something I took lightly. I did this last summer but just got around to finally posting how I did it with picture descriptions. I wanted to describe how to, for anyone to do it safely and ...

Re: Swing keel versus water ballast?

The point of the fiberglass over Steel as pointed out by Sailboatmike is correct in being aware of. In my case my keel is solid steel

Re: Swing keel versus water ballast?

With proper maintenance a swing keel should not fail. I bought an 1984 M21 three years ago that had the original crank and swing keel cable and pin. The boat was only used on a lake. I inspected the set up and found it to be in good shape but the crank was a bit rusty. I greased it up and used it fo...

Sail boat flips

Not sure where to post this. But looks like a nightmare. Not sure what happened here. Maybe they let main down and jib got tangeled and they floated to disaster. What I don't get is why no motor to get away from the pier. Maybe no motor?

Keel Pivot Bolt Torque

I am going to replace my keel pivot bolt. I ordered a new one from blue water yachts and it came with nice instructions the cup washers and rubber seals. However the directions say to tighten until rubber seals are squished but not deformed. My boat is a 1984 Mac 21 Does any one know what the correc...

Re: Macgregor 21 Swing Keel Cable Wear Bolt Location

Just an update as I have not done this yet To put a new wear bolt is too much work. I don't have enough space for metal and rubber washers, to put one, next to the existing bolt. I would need to refill the old hole first with glass then make the new hole. It just easier to install on the deck a new ...

Re: Forestay wire and furling advice needed

I am sure others will chime with lots of info. I believe it's 1/8th" but not larger than 1/4". I would take it to west marine and match size. Most west marine stores have a station where you can use the swdge tool to press the niko press fitting. It's easy to do. I would use stainless Not sure why i...

Re: Swing Keel Bolts - Please ID in my V17 Photo

The orientation is strange from the image. Not sure about the others but the bolt with the wing nut should be the lock down bolt for the keel. Reason I say this is because you need to be able to remove that bolt when locking down the keel. Make sure it's snug but not super tight when sailing.

Re: Mac 26S swing keel won't retract, what's wrong!

Did you check if the keel pin was removed before trying to raise the keel? That could be an easy answer. Or maybe the winch is not operating the way it should.

Macgregor 21 Swing Keel Cable Wear Bolt Location

I would like to thank all those pose and answer questions as I have learned a lot. This is my first post and hope some of you might be able to help. I have a 1985 Macgregor 21 with steel keel. I am going to change the keel winch and keel cable that I obtained from bwyachts.com. The previous owners d...
